In Oannes the Fish, a wise and kind fish comes up from the sea and teaches humans things that will improve their everyday lives to make them a little easier. In the Legend of the Jackal and the Color Blue, a selfish dog convinces the other jackals that he is a god and that they must worship him. At first, the other jackals believed
him and began to pay him homage.
Oannes taught humans how to build cities, and temples. Oannes wanted a just and kind society, so he taught the humans how to make laws and how to establish justice. The blue jackal, however, wanted to enslave his fellow jackals and was to focused on the worship he was given to care about the lives of the animals he was above.
After Oannes taught the humans everything he knew to help him, he went back into the sea because he was an amphibian and needed to go back to the water. The humans he helped remembered his kindness and made a representation of him to remember his physical form and also to remember his actions towards them. The animals the jackal lorded over destroyed and ate him when they saw his true nature: a simple, selfish jackal who deceived them. The jackal was accidently turned blue by a pot of dye and tried to convince others that he was a god. Oannes walked with struggling humans and decided to share his knowledge with them. Oannes was caring towards the humans and taught them how to run a just society, the jackal didn’t care about his subjects at all as long as the were worshiping him. Oannes was loved, cherished and appreciated by those he helped; the jackal was hated to the point of death by those he lorded over.
