Personal Responsibility and College Success
Personal responsibility can mean so many different things, depending on the individual. Personal responsibility means taking care of myself, family, community, and college success. Possessing personal responsibility means that as an individual he or she is responsible for their own actions and accept the consequences that come from the actions and the way it affects his or her lives. Without personal responsibility, the student is not only letting him or herself down but also his or her team as well. As students we are responsible for upholding the highest commitment to excellence to ourselves as well as our team. Attaining responsibility in college includes: coming to class on time eager to learn, respecting the teacher and classmates, taking notes, completing assigned work on time, studying outside class time, and accepting the challenges and tackling them head on. Someone who has personal responsibility will do what it takes to succeed, such as studying for a test. A student with personal responsibility will study for a test while a student who does not have personal responsibility will not. The student who chose not to study will hope that something good will come out of nothing. Whether you believe it or not, if you fail to have personal responsibility it can have a detrimental affect on your life. Failing to have personal responsibility can cause you to be overly dependent on others, fearful of taking risk or making a decision, emotionally or physically unhealthy, unable to develop trust or feel secure with others and resistant to vulnerability. If we fail to be responsible we are not only affecting ourselves but also our team. The attitude and motivation each person possesses is a good indication of how well he or she will succeed in his or her college career. The instructor is not responsible for your learning, you are! Instructors give you the resources to obtain the knowledge. It is all about what you want as a student. You either want to learn or you do not, there is no in between. As a college student, we have personal responsibility to do our own work and maintain satisfactory grades; if one fails to do this it will have a negative impact on their lives and college
