to be very persuasive and somewhat frightening because the nation was sure they would be able to stay out of the war. He told them, “...our very midst the physical attack which we must eventually expect if the dictator nations win this war.” By saying this he is evoking fear to get his message to the citizens. Then when Kennedy spoke he told them that they are a strong united country and he used promising language to create trust in the citizens. In his closing he uses symbolism about the nation's prosperity calling it fire and saying that it can truly light the world.
Roosevelt was convincing the country that we need help in war but Kennedy, 20 years later was convincing the country that we could help poor nations. Roosevelt that our nation is strong enough to make it through the war with our big allies but we cannot do it by ourselves, “As men do not live by bread alone, they do not fight by armaments alone,” he uses an idiom from the bible to compare what we need and what we can do. When Kennedy spoke he said “If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.” Which is a powerful statement calling on us to help. The biggest message that both presidents were trying to convey was that we need to act now. Roosevelt was stressing quick action to join the ally because the war was going to happen weather we joined or not. And Kennedy spoke briefly about the cold war with Russia saying, “ Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.” Both presidents think that America is a strong nation and want to keep it strong and eventually it will be stronger. Both presidents call the citizens to help in the actions that need to happen. Today's presidents needs to look back on presidents like this because they did amazing things for our nation and made it the most prosperous.
