Situational irony is a situation in the story that goes opposite to what was suppose to happen, In other words a sharp turn in the other direction. A situation that I thought was a situational irony in the movie was when the lion attacked the man to protect Walter and it died instead of the man.…
Irony is an event that the reader expects to happen, but is the quite opposite, usually for a funny or dramatic effect. In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Peyton Fahrquar is sentenced to death by hanging by the federal military during the civil war for attempting to burn a bridge they were controlling. In this short story, Fahrquar jumps off of the bridge with the noose around his neck and his hands and feet tied, but he still lives. This is an example of irony because the reader will expect him to die instantaneously, but suddenly it was as if the rope grew longer and he fell into the water. As he ‘escapes’, sharpshooters aim and fire, but not a single round will touch him. At the end of the short story, it explains how Fahrquar runs all night to get to his family, just as…
In The Story of an Hour situational irony is used when Mr. Mallard turns up alive when during the whole story he is thought to be dead. It is ironic when Mrs. Mallard dies at the end of the story. There is foreshadowing for Mrs. Mallard dying but it is still unexpected. It is also ironic when we are not told any details about Mrs. Mallard’s death when throughout the whole story so far we have been told everything that Mrs. Mallard is thinking. In The Interlopers there is situational irony when Ulrich and Georg are eaten by wolves at the end of the story. This is ironic because the two men just became friends and it is expected that they will be rescued and live happily ever after but instead they are killed by wolves. There was slight foreshadowing of their fate being decided by nature when the story states that the creatures were abnormally active tonight but the ending was still much…
Entire stories can be told using the ironic point of view. It is often used as a means of presenting the theme of a story. Authors Ha Jin, and Chinua Achebe used the irony of situation. Irony of situation meaning discrepancy between the expected results and the actual results of the story.…
Two types of irony are presented in the short story The Story of an Hour, situational and dramatic irony. Situational irony is irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected. Dramatic irony is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play or story. Situational irony is expressed through Mrs. Mallard’s actions to her husband’s death in the train accident. When she first heard the news of her husband’s death Mrs. Mallard “wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment”(188). It appeared to everyone that she was very sad and upset so she went upstairs to her bedroom; although, she was flowing with excitement. It is natural for a person to be very upset after losing a loved one, so they all understood what was happening.…
Irony is a contradiction between what appears to happen and what actually happens. The type of irony most often used in Animal Farm is situational irony. Situational irony is an event that is opposite what the characters expect. The pigs, who become the leaders of all the animals, give orders to the other animals. This is an example of situational irony because one of the original commandments is “all animals are equal”, but the pigs begin to take charge of the other animals and the animals are no longer treated equally. Another example of situational irony in the book is that the revolution, which was supposed to make the farm more prosperous and all the animals better fed, ended up only benefitting the pigs and the dogs that were in charge. The irony in Animal Farm relates to the quote by John F. Kennedy because the original rebellion against the farmers was violent because the farmers wouldn’t give the animals what they wanted peacefully. Another…
Another very obvious example of irony is when the compensation for Herbert’s death is the exact sum they wished for. This is shown as ironic because Herbert had said the day before “Well, wish for 200 pounds, then that will do it” (page 5). Then, later in the next day, there was a visitor saying that Herbert had passed away due to an accident until they realized the White family had been handed 200 pounds for the death of their son (page 7). This is a sign of situational irony because it is known that Herbert is the one that had asked for the 200 pounds to be wished but he ended up dead afterward and the White family had gotten the 200 pounds handed to them. All in all, these are examples of situational irony in the short story “The Monkey’s Paw”.…
3) Examples of irony is when the narrator says that “the minds of the king’s subjects are refined* and cultured*” by witnessing the events in the arena. This statement is ironic because a person being slaughtered is neither refining nor cultural. We are also told that the princess finds out that the lady chosen to be behind the door just happens to be a woman the princess was already jealous of. She has to choose whether or not to give her lover to a woman she hates, or to a tiger that will kill the accused person was instantly punished, and there was no escape from the judgments of the king's arena.ent of innocence or guilt up to chance is very ironic.…
In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, the entire plot is an example of situational irony. Dorothy travels a long way to find the Wizard of Oz to find a way to get back home to Kansas but discovers that she has had the ability to go home the entire time. The Scarecrow wants to have a brain but soon finds he is a genius, the Woodsman thinks he is incapable of love but then discovers he has a heart, the Lion comes across as a coward but then turns out to be extremely courageous. Finally, the Wizard, who is admired by everyone, turns out to have no special powers and is just an eccentric old man.…
The irony in this story is that they both bought gifts for each other, which they could no longer use. It uses a specific type of irony called situational irony it is defined as “an event occurs that directly contradicts the expectations of the characters, the reader, or the audience.” The author used this type of irony to surprise the readers, and directly relate it to the biblical story of the three magi. It adds a sense of humor when the readers find out what they did, but also a connection towards the characters feelings. But how could irony and also suspense be used in the other work?…
An example of situational irony is when Napoleon gets drunk. This is situational irony because the catalyst for the revolution was Jones being a drunkard and neglecting the farm. An example of dramatic irony is how the pigs are changing the commandments and becoming more like human beings and more strict with giving out rations of food and no improvements to living conditions were made. the animals of the…
Authors use situational irony to convey themes to make the audience expect something to happen from what actually happens. For instance, in the story “The Apology” Plato uses irony to propel the theme that too much learning is a dangerous thing. The situational irony of “they were wrong to kill me." means that the prisoner Socrates should’ve been celebrated for his knowledge instead is killed. Familiar to the story “By the Waters of Babylon” Stephen Vincent addresses the matter believe those who are seeking, doubt those who find it. By including “If you eat too much of the truth at once, you may die of the truth." shows that the character father encouraged his son not to tell the villagers the truth because they will believe he is absurd. (Benét…
Three policemen came to inspect the house because a shriek had been heard by a neighbor. The readers know that the reason a shriek was heard is because the narrator killed the old man and while the narrator was killing him, he let out shriek, but only once. This is an example of dramatic irony because the readers know that the narrator killed the old man which resulted in the shriek. However, the policemen don’t know that.…
The use of IRONY to forcefully convey an unconventional comparison of a thinking human and a thoughtless animal.…
Throughout a story, a writer will incorporate the use of irony into the text in order to provoke a certain idea towards the readers that will establish a further understanding of the story. In “The Gift of The Magi” by O. Henry, and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant both writers use situational irony to develop the theme of sacrifice throughout the stories. The use of situational irony can create suspense within the text which helps make the readers understand a point that the author is trying to convey. In “The Gift of The Magi” situational irony is developed when Jim and Della both sacrifice their most prized possessions, their watch and hair so that they can buy each other gifts, however they both buy gifts that neither of them can use…
