Apparently, it is possible to find a lot of similarities between Homer’s “The Odyssey”, written about 3,000 years ago and When the Game Stands Tall with the much more recent hero Coach Bob Ladouceur. First of all, Coach Lad
A substantial amount of movies are based off of books. Rarely, the movies prove themselves better than their book counterparts, and sometimes the movie falls short of the mark. O Brother Where Art Thou? is unusual because it tends to stay on track with the Odyssey. Due to the fact that O Brother Where Art Thou? takes place in 1930’s Mississippi, plot elements obviously do not correlate directly, but other than that elements tend to be similar. Overall, The Odyssey and O Brother Where Art Thou? share similar major characters (with a few differences), and even with the changed setting, the plot events are similar as well.…
As with Joseph Campbell, the monomyth pattern is seen in many movies and books. Stories in which the protagonist goes through struggles that are often unfair, but through hard work and faith they prevail and come out on top. They get knocked down, but they get back up. Three stories that repear this plot are Homer’s Oddyssey, Rocky, and Starwars. In Odyssey, Oddyseus is a leader of a tough war against the Trojans, where he comes out victorious. On his travels home he encounters countless obstacles that he uses wit and faith in his gods to overcome. He ends up happily reunited with his family and lives happily ever after. In Rocky, the main character is Rocky Balboa, who is a struggling boxer who is quickly growing too old for the sport.…
In today’s society many stories and novels have similar prologues and similar formats. The main reason this happens is because people use the same techniques and strategies as other writers. This is also true with some older novels, such as Romeo and Juliet and The Odyssey. Romeo and Juliet and the Odyssey have similar prologues because they both tell the whole plot including the ending, they both have 10 syllables in almost every line, and they both foreshadow some events that will take place in the novel.…
Monomyth or the hero’s journey is a basic pattern, which is found in many narratives and myths from around the world. The monomyth is “one of the dominant archetypal pattern in literature, film, and even video game text is the story of a journey.” Through an in-depth analysis of The Step not taken by Paul D’Angelo, this essay will give an explanation of the three stages of a monomyth. The monomyth is made up of three stages that the hero moves through. The stages are departure or separation, struggle or initiation, and return and reintegration.…
The fictional queen of Ithaca and and a woman in 1930’s Mississippi having anything in common might seem like a stretch but in fact, they are more similar than they seem at first glance. Penelope of The Odyssey and Penny of O Brother, Where Art Thou have much in common along with characteristics that set them apart from each other. Penelope is presented as loyal, distraught. Penny is presented as unapologetic and a more independent, strong woman when being compared to Penelope. The two women are similar in that they are both cunning and cautious. Many of these changes are made in order to allow the character to blend into the time period and, in the case of Penny, to create a stronger, more realistic female character.…
“….But any man I catch trying to skulk behind his long beaked ship, hanging back from battle, he is finished. No way for him to escape the dogs and birds!” So he commanded and the armies gave a deep resounding roar like the waves crashing against a cliff when a South Wind whips it, bearing down, some craggy headland jutting out to sea, the waves will never leave it in peace, thrashed by gales that hit from every quarter, breakers left and right.”*1…
The same hero wearing a different mask appears throughout great literature and films. The “hero’s journey” motif, as Joseph Campbell, the acclaimed American mythology professor and famous author identified, has been present in all cultures since the first documented stories. From Odysseus and the other great figures of the ancient Greek myths to the more modern character of Frodo in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the audience essentially accompanies the same hero throughout a series of stages and obstacles that compose the original heroic journey. The hero’s journey can be particularly followed in the various animated Disney films that give existence to some of the most loved heroes of all time. For instance, the successful film, Aladdin, released in 1992 and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, brings to the public the interesting journey of a young man on a quest to find himself. The character of Aladdin fits the profile of the hero as he embarks in the hero’s journey unintentionally but proves to have undergone a complete maturation of character while attaining valuable insight about his true nature and worth by the end of the adventure.…
Within each passage, both Homer and Atwood depict Sirens with immense differences through the use of tone. The Odyssey has a strong component intensity and urgency throughout the entire piece. Starting with, “… Our trim ship speeding toward the Sirens’ island,” setting the stage for later on when Homer’s, “Heart inside [him] throbbed to listen… [to] their urgent call,” concludes the passage with a powerful tone of clear intensity. Meanwhile, the second poem, Song of Seiren, includes an urgency only within the song, “Help me! Only you, only you can,” the rest of the poem has an air of nonchalance and indifference. This is due to the differing points of view of each poem. The Odyssey is told by Odysseus, a male sailor who barely skims by the…
