During the 1960s coming of age was different compared to the late 1990s because there was a large gap in time and the world wasn´t as developed as it is today. A reason being is Scout came of age by learning valuable life lessons and learning from her mistakes. She also came of age by going out on her own and disobeying her father, Atticus. Charlie came of age by participating in life and taking the advice of putting himself first and not letting life pass him by. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the author´s message is everyone
should be treated with respect, no matter their race, gender, etc. In The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the author´s message is we can’t control where we´ve come from or what happens to us, but we can control we go from there. A few similarities between Scout and Charlie are, they both are extremely intelligent and know how to approach certain situations. A coming of age tale in 2018 will be different from these two novels because everything is so modern now and there are many people to help them along the way.
In conclusion both Scout and Charlie are similar and different in so many ways. These two characters were the main characters of their novels and learned valuable life lessons when coming of age.
