Similarities Between Wilson And Tom Buchanan
In the novel The Great Gatsby Tom Buchanan and George Wilson both have many similarities and differences in the way they treat women. Whether it is how they treat their wives or the way that Tom treats Myrtle, the woman he is cheating on Daisy with. Tom Buchanan believes that since he comes from old money and he did not have to work for his wealth that he is entitled to anything that he wants without having to face the consequences. In the novel it says “she’s not leaving me! Certainly not for a common swindler who’d have to steal the ring he put on her finger” (Fitzgerald 133). This just shows how Tom feels about Daisy that no matter what he does that she will not leave him. In Tom’s relationship with Daisy, Daisy knew that she was being

“Woodrow Wilson became president of the United States in 1913, and would forever change interventionism and the role it played in the world” (pg. 628). I believe that President Woodrow Wilson and President George Washington were dissimilar in most of their beliefs. “President Woodrow Wilson believed that Latin Americans were inferior to the United States” (pg. 629). President George Washington believed in unity and making America stronger together. President George Washington discouraged Americans to get involved with foreign relations and try to solve disputes with peace and understanding.…

If you knew that your husband was cheating on you, would you leave him? Do you believe it would be right for him to judge you for being with another man while he himself is with other women? For these reasons and a few more, it can be argued that Daisy Buchanan should leave her husband, Tom Buchanan, for Jay Gatsby. Tom Buchanan is racist, misogynistic, and full of himself. He believes it is perfectly reasonable for him to cheat on his wife, but if she has another man on the side, then she is at fault. Daisy’s love interest, Jay Gatsby, truly adores her and has sought after her for the past five years. He has planned out his every action around the hopes that he will get to meet Daisy again and their love will continue to flourish. Daisy would…

Tom Buchanan was married to Daisy Buchanan, and Tom was having an affair with Myrtle Wilson- who was married to George Wilson. Jay Gatsby had always loved Daisy Buchanan, and they finally got reconnected one day after years. This reuniting was a result of Nick moving beside Gatsby, because Nick was Daisy’s cousin. Gatsby had an ostentatious house and car. Furthermore, he regularly had large parties at his mansion. Nick stated that “there was music coming from [his] neighbor’s house through the summer nights…. and on weekends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus bearing parties to and from the city” (39). This quote gives readers the idea that Gatsby had the same parties day in and day out. There was always a crowd at Gatsby’s house, the same crowd over and over, that went to drink their worries away. Gatsby was defined as having “new money”, meaning that he did not grow up in money. That was not the case for Tom and Daisy. They lived in the “old money” side of the bay. Daisy was married to Tom for his money, mostly. In that time period, women could not divorce their husbands so Daisy was stuck with him. Moreover, Gatsby obtained his money in order to impress Daisy. In…

I believe that both presidents Woodrow Wilson and Donald Trump are both racist by current standards. They both did racist things while they were president, which they should have been careful about because it caused numerous issues and contempt. Racism can cause debate amongst individuals and gatherings. Presidents should offer peace and not racism to the country their giving a chance to be in control of. Every president should set a good example among their residents.…

Fitzgerald successfully paints the clear picture of George’s financial history through Myrtle’s sympathy and grief of her quasi-failed marriage. At one point in Fitzgerald’s novel, Myrtle is brought to tears as she laments over the discovery of George borrowing another man’s best suit on her wedding day. Despite financial limitations, George can only resort to displaying his love and compassion through the use of action. George does not live the extravagant lifestyle like the other major characters of The Great Gatsby, thus he is seen at the lowest end of the economic spectrum of prosperity, yet his integrity places him above all other characters in the novel. Sadly, this honest attitude blinds George from the fact that that Myrtle is discontent in her marriage and is living an adulterous lifestyle with Tom Buchanan.…

The Great Gatsby portrays a variety of realities that happen in everyday life and that are at times not spoken of but need attention called out to, realities such as dishonesty and affairs, are delicate topics that Fitzgerald brings up to the audience. Dishonesty and affair issues are seen through Tom and the involvement he has with another woman while married to Daisy since he openly admits it to Nick, ordering “We’re getting off!’ he insisted ‘I Want you to meet my girl” (928). Of course, when he said ‘girl’ he was not referring to Daisy, he was cynically accepting the affair he was having with her and in way, one might say, proud by the tone he used, almost excitedly saying it. Fitzgerald does not hide the fact that it is an issue that needs some calling out and in the process also breaks the stereotype that it is only men who are disloyal since, Myrtle, Tom’s “girl” is also a married woman having an affair on her husband with…

In the beginning of the story Daisy remained loyal to Tom even though he wasn't loyal to her. For example in the book it quotes,”perhaps Daisy never went in for amour at all(76)”, meaning that she never had an affair, at the time, unlike Tom who was found with another girl the day after they married. Tom bossed Daisy around having her do things as he controlled her life entirely, leaving her…

At this party we also find out that Daisy’s finger is bruised because of Tom. This idea is solidified when Daisy says,”I’m glad it’s a girl. And i hope she’ll be a fool-that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”(17). Which indicates that if her daughter was a fool she’d be too naive to understand, for example, that her husband is cheating on her, like with Daisy and Tom. It also shows that Daisy knows about Tom’s affair but she doesn’t plan to do anything about it so she can stick with the money that Tom has. Nick also says, later in the story, “ A week after i left Santa Barbara Tom ran into a wagon on the Ventura road one night, and ripped a front wheel off his car. The girl who was with him got into the papers, too, because her arm was broken- she was one of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotel”(77). Which would again prove that Daisy had to know about the affair and again did nothing about it so she could stay with his money. These instances demonstrate the shallow relationship between Tom and Daisy because of her inability to leave…

Marriages in ‘The Great Gatsby’ are linked with materialistic desires. It is evident that Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s marriage is largely based on these aspirations. Daisy is described by Nick as having “an excitement in her voice that men who cared for her found difficult to forget” and by Fitzgerald presenting her as a beautiful trophy that men aspire to win, Tom also becomes an object of admiration. Tom, coming from an upper class family with “old money”, provides Daisy with security and stability. Nick describes their home as being “even more elaborate than I expected” with “French windows” which were “glowing now with reflected gold”,…

Both Gatsby and Wilson love a woman who loves Tom Buchanan. Even though George Wilson loved and married Myrtle Wilson, he never truly had her love. On their wedding day, Myrtle was disgusted with the fact the Wilson borrowed a wedding suit. Nick says, "This was a forlorn hope- he was almost sure that Wilson had no friend: there was not enough of him for his wife” (Fitzgerald 159). Even though he works tirelessly to provide for his wife,Wilson will never be able to quench Myrtle’s thirst of the high class and money. Wilson is limited not only personality wise but also financially and Myrtle needs more. This is why she is having an affair with the man who can give her all wants in life: Tom Buchanan. On the same note, Gatsby new persona wasn’t…

In “The Great Gatsby” Daisy Buchanan is the housewife of Tom Buchanan. Daisy and Tom live in a society where women are suppressed and people live by the idea that “the best thing a girl can be in this world [is] a beautiful little fool" (Gatsby, 21). Daisy allows her husband, Tom, to have an affair, but when Tom finds out that Daisy was with Jay Gatsby he realizes that Daisy is equivalent to Tom in her actions and “if that's the idea” of what society has come to then Tom wants to be “[counted] out” (Gatsby, 124). Evidently, In Toms eyes, as well as the rest of society, men and women have different standards and values.…
