Simple Gift
how does belonging emerge from connection to people?

In both the simple gift, a collection of poems by steven herrick and UP a pixar film directed by Pete Doctor connections to people are present. in the simple gift the characters Old Bill and Billy have a similar connection to Carl and Russell. These connections lead to both groups sharing a feeling of belonging when they are together.

Billy is a sixteen year old boy who has a lack of connection to his family and alcoholic father as well as a lack of connection to place, although he feels a connection with nature. In the poem “Longlands Road” Billy says “i throw one rock on the roof of each deadbeat, no-hoper, shithole, lonely, downtrodden house in Longlands Road”. This shows the audience how much he doesn’t care about his community in a condescending and bitter tone. in order to counteract this lack of belonging billy goes down to the creek in his spare time and chooses to belong there billy decides to pack his bags and leave home. when he gets to benderat he decides to stay there. this gives him a chance to start a new life. “ i wait for the three whistles to dump me in another state, miles from home and school” this shows the importance of being very far away from his home town and violent, alcoholic father.

Like Billy, Russell from up is a young boy who enjoys to be in nature, he is a wilderness explorer, an only child with an unclear family background. His dad is mostly absent although unlike billy, russell looks up to him in every way and yet there is no real connection between them.

Old Bill for billy however is a friend. Old bill is an old man who suffers trauma due to the loss of his daughter Jessie and his wife. This led Old Bill to ‘homelessness’ as his home reminds him too much of his daughter and wife bringing him to the streets turning to alcohol to hide the pain. He says “ and this pub, this beer, these clothes, this is where i landed”. the use of repitition of the word “this”

So it goes. Barbara had this special talent to repel people away. Her biggest worry however had always been her gone-absolutely-bonkers-father. She had taken Billy to an elderly house shortly after he’d decided to write letters about Tralfamadore to the local newspaper. Billy had always lived a life full of indignity and so, perhaps, had no great fear of death.…

The symbolism and scatological imagery establishes a decaying, decrepit and depressing environment, which reveals Billy’s isolation. Another evocative portrait is the internal monologue in the poem "Sport" in chapter one. The 'pain and suffering’ of 'soulless tyranny' endured by Billy, from 'the old bastard' his father.…

Herrick conveys the importance of genuine connections to the world around a character to belonging quite effectively in his book “The Simple Gift”. In one of the first poems “Longlands Road” the lack of connections between main character Billy and his environment are shown. The quote “This place has never looked so rundown and beat” uses pejorative colloquial personification of the town, to show his dislike, and lack of connections to it.. There is an accumulation of negative imagery in the lines “old Basten’s truck still on blocks, the grass unmown around the doors. Mrs Johnston’s mailbox on the ground...” this conveys the environment as un-nurturing and decrepit and further explains Billy's hate for the town. These descriptions are also a pathetic fallacy, paralleling Billy’s lack of self-worth and sense of belonging. The importance of genuine connections to your environment is further evident in Walwicz’ text “Australia”. The text is a feature article where the composer describes the country they have moved to. The anaphora of “you” and distances the composer from their environment, which shows isolation and exclusion. The quote “You desert with your nothing nothing nothing” uses repetition of the word “nothing” conveying the composers view that the place is worthless. The pejorative diction “You big awful” depicts the country negatively. These techniques show Ania’s negative feelings and lack of connections to the country. These connections…

However, after fleeing “home” he discovers his real, genuine home is within an old train carriage upon his meeting with a friendly man named Ernie. Contrast between Billy’s father and Ernie indicates Billy’s unstable relationship with his father and his comforting relationship with Ernie. In ‘Bendarat’, just before Billy leaves the freight train, he demands Ernie with the phrase “dump me in another state”. The use of symbolism represents Billy’s lack of control over his…

In The Simple Gift, Herrick uses techniques such as sarcastic tone, free verse, repetition, simile, ellipsis, imagery, and allusion to develop the character of Billy. At the beginning of the novel, Billy detests living with his abusive, alcoholic father and would rather be homeless and alone. This is shown through techniques such as sarcastic tone and free verse to create a realistic sense of dialogue. “See ya Dad./I’ve taken the alcohol./Drink this instead/to celebrate your son/leaving home.” (2) Herrick uses repetition and simile to express Billy’s realization that not all adults are cruel. “There are men like Ernie/and/there are other men,/men like my dad.” (14) Billy’s maturity is shown using ellipsis and imagery when he helps Old Bill and shows signs of self-development. “I got a bowl/filled it with weetbix/and I took it next door/to Old Bill.” (55) Imagery is used to illustrate that Billy washes his past away and that he is prepared and excited for a new and happier life. “To the Bendarat Laundry/to wash the world away.” (57) Throughout the novel Billy becomes a ‘different’ individual, showing positive thinking and growth. Herrick demonstrates this through the use of allusion. “sure there's hope in the world/even for hobos like us." (110) Therefore it is evident that Herrick has successfully used a range of techniques to develop Billy’s character in The Simple Gift.…

Although the poem explores this particular emotion of the persona, the composer is yet to reveal the personas ‘rough Australian outback man’. This side of him has not left him and voice haunts him to come back home “to the bush and the wallaby track, to the home in the clearing, the sheep and the sheering”. For those who have not experienced the Australian outback the poet may be perplexing (confusing). The outback is very harsh and barren; the Australian men who have lived in the outback are made for the desolate terrain. The outback is one like no other and has a special connection to many who reside there. This connection has been made with the man.…

In summary the story might seem a family’s selfless trip to bury their mother, but the truth is far from it. Of the five children; Darl, Dewey Dell, Jewel, Cash and Vardaman and the father Anse only Jewel and Darl have no other motives. The two may be the only to have genuine love for their mother, but Jewel most of all. Because of fierce devotion to his mother Jewel risks his own life more than once to save his mother’s casket. This causes a rift between the two half-brothers. At one point in the novel the family is faced with crossing a flooded bridge. Darl believed Jewel should take a rope across the river to pull the family’s wagon across, but instead Jewel carried across Addie’s casket. The divide between them in this anecdote is represented by a log barreling down the river, taking the family’s wagon with it. Afterwards the family spends the…
