Introduction
We, as co-managers of Club z Inc., used differentiation strategy which “seeks to provide products or services that offer benefits that are different from those of competitors and that are widely valued by buyers”(Johnson, Scholes and Whittington, p.229, 2008) in order to meet the shareholders/investor’s expectations which were: 1. Grow earnings per share(EPS) 7% annually through year 15 and 5% annually thereafter. 2. Maintain a ROE(Return On average Equity) investment of 15% or more every year. 3. Maintain B+ credit rating or higher. 4. Achieve image rating of 70 or higher, and 5. Stock price gains averaging about 7%per year through year 15 and 5%per year thereafter.
(Thompson, Stappenbeck and Reidenbach, 2012).
We are in the athletic footwear industry competing against five other companies.
To formulate our strategies, we carried out an analysis of our company’s resources using VRIO model(see appendix 1). The strategies we used were mostly emergent as we experienced some unforeseen reactions from our competitors most of the time. We engaged logical inrementalism which is “the deliberate development of strategy by experimentation and learning from partial commitment”(Johnson, Scholes and Whittington, p.408, 2008) in our strategy formulation to deal with the new challenges we were faced with each year of our decision making.
In the five years of our decision making, we met and exceeded the investors’ expectations.
YEAR 11
Strategy
We chose differentiation strategy because cost leadership was not sustainable as all the companies had equal market share, same price for their products and same number of models.
YEAR 14
We were now well aware of our main competitors’ weaknesses who were companies A, B and D and we decided to focus on those weaknesses to build on our strengths.

Another weakness in the company was the reject shoes. Company D had over 2000 pairs of rejected shoes each year for the first 4 years of operation. This hurt the brand at first but helped the company learn to make improvements to machines to decrease rejects. Once improvements started on the machines the less rejects the company saw. If I were to do it all over again, I would have started making improvements after the first year of several rejects like I saw.…

The two generic business strategies are differentiation and cost-leadership strategies, and they are fundamentally different from one another, both with their own drawbacks and risks (Rothaermel, 2013). These strategies are referred to as “generic” because they may be used by any type of organization (Rothaermel, 2013). The drawbacks and risks of a differentiation generic strategy is its viability “is severely undermined when the focus of competition shifts to price rather than value-creating features” (Rothaermel, 2013, p. 155). This tends to occur when there is a level of acceptable quality which has emerged as a standard (Rothaermel, 2013). Organizations pursuing this strategy also need to ensure that they are not adding features which add cost but no “perceived value in the minds of consumers” (Rothaermel, 2013, p. 155).…

Although I chose Niche Cost Leadership with reasoning, executing the strategy and making it happen was much more challenging. I did not seem to have a good understanding on the program itself, or my strategy; I did not comprehend exactly how to change my traditional product to low end, or my high end product to traditional. I was entering numbers based solely on consumer’s ideal preferences, rather than understanding these numbers. After entering what I thought were correct numbers, I was seeing no effect. After receiving some assistance, I am beginning to get back on track. I have started transitioning my high end product to a traditional (refer to figure 1); and I am now regaining profit back. Although my strategy has not yet achieved any of my company goals at this point, with gaining more understanding of my strategy and how to implement it, I will be successful.…
