Sissy's Monologue
Sissy untangled her Legs from Jennica’s and gathered her twisted skirts. She got to her feet and reached down, touching Jennica on the cheek, “One step at a time,” she said. She nodded as though she had just agreed something with herself and she added, “I will send Petunia Plum to show you.” Then Sissy was gone, like the phantom she was known to be, and Jennica wondered if she had been there at all. But whether or not the meeting had been imagined, she had her answer. She had to return to the farm for two reasons; firstly to find out who Petunia Plum was and secondly to take claim her life back. Simon mocked her. He would. She had no idea how she was going to break new ground but at least she knew that she wanted to and it felt good wanting to live. For far too long life had been a slog but that night, after Sissy disappeared into the rows of corn, Jennica took the proverbial cross that was nailed to her back, compliments of Simon Preston, and tossed it on the ground. Simon found it all quite funny, because he would. He didn’t believe in anything, and he could laugh all he wanted, but she knew it was no coincidence that she had chosen to start again in Simon hell. It was like standing on the edge of a cliff, combine harvester coming at you, and knowing that the only way to go is down. So the only way for her to come back to life was to take a leap of faith and go back to the place where she had died emotionally. Down she would go so that she could rise up out of it, renewed, like the phoenix. She didn’t expect Simon to understand, after all, nobody goes to the devil for confession.
