Sister Dorothy Last Words
Sister Dorothy was a woman who wanted to get her word out and make what people thought was impossible, possible. That is one of the reasons why I admire her the most, she was convinced that she was able to rebuild the forest to make it where it was before. I also admired her courageousness to step out and do the job even though she was on the death list in the Amazon. She knew what she was doing everyday was a possibility of her getting punished by the gunmen. There are not a lot of people in this world that would sacrifice their lives to do something to save God’s environment. Her last words were very meaningful to us and especially the gunmen who shot her. Sister Dorothy’s last words were from Luke 6:20 “Blessed are you who are poor, for …show more content…
She shows me that other things in life are just as important as others, we need to take the creations we got gifted with from God for granted. Just like her reaching out to get the forest vigorous again, she never gave up and was always looking to God to help her. She was a decisive woman and told everyone that it was possible to get the forest back where it needed to be no matter how challenging it was. I can apply this to my life by not giving up on accomplishments or goals in my life. When I need to reach a high standard I should be constantly thinking about God and asking for his help to help me achieve my goal. It can sometimes be hard to stay positive in our lives, but just like Sister Dorothy we can make things possible with the faith God has given us. She also was a kindhearted woman who didn’t think for herself. Sister Dorothy was a generous woman willing to invite a gentleman to the Amazon. The man didn’t know where to go once he got there and had to make a lot of trips to get to her. She helped him get there and once he saw her, she gave him a rose. I can be more like her by thinking of others and providing them with what they need. Just the small things in life can make someone happy. At the end of the video the gentleman who met her called Sister Dorothy his best friend just from the little time he was with

She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 55. Even though I was not born at the time, she was still getting over the pain it caused her. She also faced rectal cancer at the age 82; which lasted for a little over a year. While she was battling this it was clear that this would be the last obstacle she would ever have. This last obstacle is similar to Beowulf when he went to fight the dragon, which was his last obstacle before the inevitable happened. Both Dorothy and Beowulf did not know that this would be the end. So this reveals that you never know what's going to come you just have to stay…

It is a touching story of familial devotion and loyalty. Even though the story feels kind of incomplete, however, there's a message, but one that is not as forcefully implemented or fulfilled as could be. Perhaps the author needed to be more precise and should have included a more extensive exploring into Dew's life and her holding onto the box. That is why the story is a bit disappointing with the way it ends. In my opinion, Dew needed to die. Without her death, the reader is left wondering about the future of the household. Did they get rid of aunt Dew? Was Ruth successful in throwing out the old box? If that is the case, then the mother was made to be more evil than she needed to be. This is nothing more than a glimpse, a short story. The father's story as a boy in the creek could have been fleshed out. Despite the flat ending, fourth elementary students can relate to this inter-generational tale. It is a wonderful way to help children understand aging, amnesia, and physical fragility at the surface. And even though he is a child, Michael has a better grasp of his great-great aunt's need for pride and shows more love and respect to aunt Dew than his mother or father does. It's a good reminder to adults to respect the elderly and not to try changing them into a new person, since they have lived their entire lives based on a certain conception, principle, or even belief an old box, and not to fall…

The diary further goes on about how she turned to god for help through her abuse she received as a woman which explains the bible, cross, and rosary beads. Consumed with the idea of having an “abundant” life, young Dorothy Day seeked happiness through men, partying, and smoking; however, in the end Day realized that all those things did not fill in the empty space in her heart. Many people today face the same problem Day dealt with- trying to fill in the missing piece in your life with something materialistic. Between guys and trying to earn a living, Day tried to fill the gap in her life. In the end I do beleive that Day reached an abundant life through the works of mercy. Through the Corporal Works of Mercy day achieved her ultimate goal- a fulfilled life. I believe her message, in simplest form, was to find a balance in living a life pleasing to God while also looking out for and bettering humanity. Don’t just live your own life, instead inspire others, stand up against injustices, and take care of one another. She recognized that our society became very good at looking out for and providing for themselves or individualistic. She challenges people to put others before themselves and restore humanity.…

Vivian Thomas was a black man living in a time of great prejudice in our country. He was very intelligent and skilled in the field of medicine and was an asset to the scientists and doctors trying to find a cure for the "blue baby" syndrome. He had great determination and humility while being faced with prejudice from so many people and is an inspiration to not only the African American scientists and medical professionals who followed him, but for many people even today who hear his story. Vivian Thomas's talents and character traits were given to him by God to be used even in the face of so many trials, and I believe, after hearing his story that God uses the trials in our lives to make us into the people he wants us to be.…

The Grandmother is described as a loud mouth Christian who “pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet..in case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady”. She also didn’t give up that dream of being a Missionary, even though she didn’t come to the United States until she was 49 years old! Once she was allowed to come to the United States, she started many schools, including Academy of the Sacred Heart here in St. Louis! Rose also taught many Native American students about God, even though they were seen as uncivilized and savage during that time. I was most inspired by the story that children would put leaves or paper on her habit while she was praying before they went to bed, and when they woke up, it hadn’t moved. She had been kneeling, praying all night. This story shows incredible devotion to God, and it really encouraged me to be just as devoted. Rose also didn’t want to loose any time she could be preaching, so she died on the trail, instead of being taken home to die a comforting death. She was 83. To be more like St. Rose Duchene, I will pray more often, and this year I will try to work on a service project, and even go on a mission trip if possible, even if I don’t get to, I will try my best to find…
