Mr. Wilcox The importance of the six turning points of the American Revolution The American Revolution is one of the biggest revolutions in the world. This revolution impact Americans and Europeans until now. In this revolution, there are six key event affect this revolution profoundly. In 1775, April 19, Lexington militiaman and British Soldiers start shooting. This the first turning point of this revolution. Before this event, there are some disagreement between British and Americans, such as the Boston Tea Party and the intolerable Act. However, no military interfered or any shooting started. This time, the “first shoot” finally appears and the real war finally starts. After the first year of the revolution, the Americans lose the most of the battles. Therefore, some Americans start doubting if this revolution and the independence are necessary. In June 1776, the publication of “Common Sense” becomes the second turning point of this revolution. “Common Sense” gives American an idea of what they want and what they are fighting for, “A government of our own is our natural right”. Thomas Paine uses this idea to explain the future of America. British can won the war with an army, but they can never conquer an idea. The third turning point is the Trenton and Princeton Battle. Jan. 3. 1777, Washington and Nathaniel Green defeated Lord Cornwallis and the Germans at Princeton and Trenton. This is one of a few victories of American at that time. This Battle restored American Morale. After this battle, Americans believe in themselves and think they have a chance of winning. The battle of Saratoga is a huge victory for Americans. In September 1777, General Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold led American defeated Burgoyne’s army. This victory has some decisive effects to both British and Americans. American army not just stop British advance to South Albany, but also prove to France that they are reliable alliance.
