Skinny And 119 Pounds Summary
The article, “Skinny and 119 Pounds, but with the Health Hallmarks of Obesity” by Gina Kolata was very interesting. I find it strange that a person can be 119 pounds and have Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a liver covered in fat. It makes you wonder because those are the conditions that obese people have and hearing about Ms. Johnson, she is nowhere near obese. This is my first time hearing about the condition “metabolic syndrome”. I did not know that people can be so skinny but have all of those unhealthy conditions going on in their bodies. When you think about diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a liver covered in fat you think about people who suffer from obesity. I wonder how Ms. Johnson physically felt weighing only 119 pounds while having all of those unhealthy conditions. The main prevention is starting a healthy diet. You can add fruit and vegetables to your meals as well. Adding whole grains to your meals will help. Eating healthy meals will prevent fat from building up. Also, cutting a lot of sugar and salt from your diet will help. Another prevention would be exercising. Exercising is good for the body. It allows you to burn fat and stay in shape. I personally exercise twice a week to stay in shape because I do not always eat healthy. I also drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. According to WebMD (2015, para. 1), “You should schedule regular checkups with your doctor. Since metabolic syndrome doesn't have symptoms, you need regular doctor visits to check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.” These conditions can also run in your family, which gives you a chance of having them as well. Diabetes and high blood pressure runs on both sides of my family, so that is why I try my best to eat
