Slavery And Human Trafficking

Slavery is when a human is being categorized as property and is forced to work without payment. Human trafficking is a major crime and is a huge violation of human rights. Every year, thousands of women and children come in contact with traffickers, in their own countries and many other countries abroad. Many traffickers use the vulnerability of women and children for sexual exploitation, forced labor, removal of organs, and is ultimately a practice of slavery. One young woman, Holly Austin Smith, is a survivor of human trafficking and recalls her experience very well. When she was fourteen, she ran away from home and settled with a man she had just met shopping at the mall that day in Ocean County, New Jersey (Smith). Within hours running
away, she realized she had met up with a manipulative, threatening man who was planning on maltreating her and compelling exertion upon her (Smith). Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery that involves the illegal movement of people for the purpose of forced labor or sexual exploitation, usually involving young children. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery and involves the use of fraud, force, or coercion to obtain a form of labor or sexual harassment (Homeland Security). Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked all around the world, encompassing the United States (Homeland Security). Traffickers look for people who are physically and emotionally vulnerable, economic deprivation, and those who dearth social safety net (Homeland Security). The victims of human trafficking are often mentally damaged once returned home. Once enslaved, the victims are often forced to live in unsanitary condition and carry out stress filled lives. They are provided with little to no healthcare or basic services and movement is restricted, as the traffickers do not want them to escape.
