Slavery can be traced back to the Vikings who raided from Ireland to Russia bringing back slaves of all types. Many of these individuals that were taken from their homes were orphaned or homeless children captured in the cities of Ireland. Slavery is not a one-time thing. History has found its way to repeat it’s self since the beginning of time. Throughout history, we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again no matter how many times the incidents reoccur. Although we are intelligent creatures we rarely learn from our mistakes. According to the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, “labor trafficking is the recruitment or obtaining of a person for labor or services through the use of force for the purposes of subjection to involuntary servitude, or slavery” (). The number of slaves that were transported within a certain amount of time during the 1400’s was astonishing. During the 1400’s over 15,000,000 slaves were taken from various parts of Africa to do just that, work for someone against their free will. For the duration of this time period any African American man, women, or children were all taken as slaves to either work in the fields or be used for sexual pleasure. These individuals are forced to work in the dark, damp places working nonstop to produce products for their master at little to no cost, or are being forced into sexual acts by their pimps. According to the US Department of State, human trafficking is “The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery”(). In the United States, there are 5.4 victims of human trafficking for every 1,000 people. This number grows larger and larger every year. The bad part is it’s just the beginning. In today’s society, most of the slaves are women and young girls, this new form of slavery is called Human Trafficking.
Over 150 years ago, slavery seemed like a thing of the past. Nowadays, we find that human slavery is actually a grim reality. At this moment, men, women, and children are being trafficked and exploited all over the world. The Thirteenth Amendment did not eliminate slavery all the way, in fact, human trafficking is now more common and is a problem not just in the Untitled States but, all over the world.
