The Haitian Revolution’s focus on freedom of slavery showed that it was caused by the cruelness the slaves had suffered because the white slave owners saw them as animals that work on their plantations. According to
American Historian Jason Bromley, he states that the way the white owners have oppressed the slaves since in the beginning of time have turned into the slaves’ anguish and suffering. (Doc 4) It is clear that the cruelness the slaves suffered caused the Haitian Revolution because of how it led to the slaves revolting. Because the slaves were being oppressed and couldn’t take it any longer, they gathered together and started fighting back as the result for being oppressed for a very long time. The source was most likely written for African Americans, which influenced the way the author stated the facts. Because the author mentioned anguish that the slaves had suffered, it shows that he had empathy for the slaves and wrote about them in that feeling of empathy. Another cause for the Haitian Revolution were the new ideas that came from the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen because many people in Saint Domingue heard about how there should be rights for every man. Especially the slaves who wanted to have rights. According to Marquis de Lafayette and the National Assembly of France, Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, men are born equal and free in rights. (Doc 1) Marquis de Lafayette supports this idea by stating that men should have equal rights and freedom. He also state some other things that is also about rights so ig shows he supports this idea by stating these rights. This supports the idea that the Declaration of Right of Man and Citizen, because this shows that everyone deserve to have equal rights no matter what race you are. This gave the African Americans new ideas and reasons to start a revolution.
