Many of the slaves that were in the US were definitely not free. Most of them had to live under someone’s rules. They were told what to do. If they did not do what they were supposed to do, they would be beaten and/or wipped. Slavery started in 1619 when 19 slaves were captured. Once those people were brought over, slavery started to grow throughout the US. Many of the slaves lived in the South. There was a lot more agriculture in the South so slave owners would have slaves pick all of their crops for them. These slaves were treated as property and pets. Slaves were not given any education. Many of the white people in the Northern states would help the slaves to escape so that they could have a better life. Slaves were never completely free but they could at least make it off of the farms they were at. A slave named Dred Scott lived in a free state with his owner. He eventually went back to Missouri which was a slave state. When he got there, a slave owner decided that he would own Dred Scott. Dred Scott then decided to take this case to court. He ended up losing this case. “...the court decided that no black, free or slave, could claim U.S. citizenship and therefore blacks were unable to petition the court for their freedom.” (History.com Staff). This case ended up being known as the Dred Scott Case. After that, slaves were not able to claim US citizenship which meant they would stay slaves even if they were in a free state.
