What Impact Did Slavery Have On The American Economy

Slavery was very important to the southern economy. The majority of slaves worked on plantation in the field where crops such as sugar, rice, tobacco and cotton where grown for profit. Other jobs that slaves had where butlers, maids, seamstresses, coachmen or they work in the stable. Slavery was very needed in the south. Manpower was need in the fields to care for and pick the crops. The slave population of the United States grew significantly once the cotton gin was invented. Slaves who were healthy and young in their late teens and twenties where consider a good investment. As the growth in the cotton increased, so did the need for more and more slaves. The planter elites were the wealthiest people of society. There were considered the elite southerners who owned of one hundred slaves. They had large plantations they lived a life of luxury and many were Political leaders. The yeomen had a small farm. They made up a large population of whites in the old south. Some of them owned slaves but most of them could not afford them. They worked in the field with family and slaves if they owned any. They were considered honest hard working people.
