In what areas does Texas consistently rank at the bottom in state spending compared to other states? 4…
An incumbent is defined as the person currently holding office. Through a political lense, incumbency has proven to be a significant advantage in the field of reelection. The graph provided above is hard evidence that incumbency often results in reelection. From 1948 to 1996 it is obvious that incumbency rates in the House of Representatives, and the Senate are high. In 1960 over 90% of incumbents in the Senate were elected, and in throughout 1948 to 1996 the House has steadily averaged around 90% of incumbents reelected. Another fact being, rates of incumbents reelected have increased over time in both the House and Senate. I can only imagine that these rates will continue to increase with the growth of media over time.…
In Congress: The Electoral Connection, David Mayhew looks into the activities that members of the United States Congress engage in, particularly those activities that are related to re-election. In his analysis, Mayhew identifies three basic activities that are pervasive throughout the United States Congress, those being advertising, credit claiming, and position taking. These three activities, altogether, are taken into high consideration by a politician that is seeking to be re-elected. When it comes to examining the behaviors of politicians running for re-election, Mayhew’s analysis is plausible, since his observations can be applied across the political spectrum any period of time.…
Erik Larson uses clinical diction to describe to the reader how Holmes mechanically functions and how he perceives the world. The use of the phrase “a decision to act or remain motionless” creates an impression of a primal creature- such as an “amphibian”- on the prowl instead of a person, making the audience question Holme’s humanity. The use of the word “objects” in comparison with people gives the audience a feeling of emptiness and detachment. This feeling…
The Electoral College is an institution that may have served a purpose 200 years ago when the founding fathers needed a system that would be met with approval by both large and small states. The Electoral College is a flawed method of electing our President that has created problems in previous elections and is likely to be the source of problems in the future. The Electoral College provides an undemocratic method of choosing our president that potentially undermines the will of the voters. Not only can a candidate be elected without actually winning the most votes, it puts our elections at the mercy of electors who don't always cast their vote as pledged. I intend to demonstrate that the problems inherent in this voting method far outweigh any benefits it may provide. Replacing the winner-take-all method of awarding electoral votes with a system such as proportional representation or eliminating the college altogether in favor of direct election is the best way to ensure a trouble-free and fair election…
Political Machines are an organized group that controls a political party in a city. They would offer services to voters and businesses in exchange for political and financial support.…
In the 1800’s the process of industrialization began in the U.S. The creation of many new inventions and the economic structure of this era made this possible. This caused millions of people to migrate to the United States from different country’s in search of better paying jobs, and a better living standard. The excessive growth of people in city’s and the diversity between rich and poor in this society were the main benefactors to the rise of political machines. This organization of politicians started by controlling the under-developed government’s, the people, and later this city‘s. Would you say that their practices had a negative affect on these city’s? Well of course they did. By the end of the 1900’s they…
After the Civil War the domination of the "political machine" over the affairs of government in the urban cities of the north became an undisputed fact of local politics. Their power flowed from creating a form of government that sought to perpetuate the position of its leaders by engaging in a bartering process with voters. The political machine existed during a time of mass migration to our urban centers from both immigrants and those in search of work. It played upon the ethnic composition of the new electorate, and their focus on obtaining basic necessities such as work, housing and food. Likewise, political machines acted as a facilitator toward businesses who chose to support them. If a business provided financial contributions and control…
The United States government should pay reparations to African Americans as a means of admitting their wrong-doing and making amends. The damages African Americans have sustained from White America's policy of slavery have been agonizing and inhumane. Therefore, I am in favor of reparations for African Americans. The effect of slavery has been an enduring issue within the African American community. Many of us are cognizant of the harm racism brought to the African American race, conveyed through slavery, racial segregation and discrimination. African Americans suffered many atrocities, but the greatest damage done to them was the destruction of they're original identity. African Americans no longer have a native language or any African customs to connect them to Africa. Today, African Americans are connected together because they all share a common foundation-the horrendous experience of slavery-and the great effort to conquer its lingering result.(www.AcedemicLibrary.com)…
3. Fallow’s gives a good description of physical movement in paragraphs 9 through 14. Yet I think it is essential to enact the idea of the kinetic chain with ones own body rather than just hear of it. Fallow’s anatomically detailed account comparent to George Orwell’s description of the dying elephant is similar while Fallow’s is definetly less complex in his wording and…
Enlightened despots believed that political change could best come from above, from the ruler. However, they were encouraged by the philosophers to make good laws to promote human happiness. How did these monarchs differ from earlier unenlightened monarchs of the past? The difference lay in tempo. These new despots acted abruptly and desired quicker results. They were impatient with all that stood in the way of their reforms. In addition, they justified their authority on the grounds of usefulness, not divine right. These new monarchs were rational and reformist and they regarded political change as possible and desirable.…
Americans are conditioned to see our present form of government as a representative democracy where power is in the hands of all the people. Until this assignment I realize did not understand plutocracy or the fact that we may already be living in a plutocracy. A plutocracy is defined as "government by the wealthy." A political system where power is concentrated in the hands of a small number of wealthy people, usually those with inherited wealth and wealthy families. At the top of every society an ironic mixture of those who are there by merit and capability and those who merely grab, hoard, and wield power and wealth. Every nation has its many, the general populace, and its few, the elite who dominate, rule, and favor themselves with wealth and privilege. It is and always has been the way of the world. It is not difficult to understand why this is so, why every society and nation forms itself into the many and the dominant few.…
Also known as benevolent despotism, the form of government in which absolute monarchs pursued legal, social, and educational reforms inspired by the ideals and philosophy of the Enlightenment, enlightened despotism spread throughout Europe during the 18th century. Monarchs ruled with the intent of improving the lives of their subjects in order to strengthen or reinforce their authority. Implicit in this philosophy was that the sovereign knew the interests of his, or her, subjects better than they themselves. Therefore, his responsibility to them thus precluded their political participation for the state. Among the most prominent Enlightened Despots were Frederick II of Prussia, Joseph II of Austria, and Catharine II of Russia.…
When Newton proposed his axioms describing fundamental laws of physics, he insisted on the necessity of absolute space to a completed theory of mechanics. Absolute space can be best described as not-relationally-dependent space. Newton purports that there is something more to space than just being a vessel to conceptualize positional differences between specific bodies; he claims that there is some objective truth to space -- that spatial differences are not dependent upon the matter contained within space. In his Principia, he states that the difference of relational and absolute space becomes manifest in the consideration of place, velocity, and acceleration. These considerations serve to metaphysically establish absolute space in themselves. However, Newton attempts to support the existence experimentally in his famous 'bucket experiment'. Through an explication of his reasoning and an analysis of his motivation, I intend to show that Newton's notion of space is, at best, incomplete.…
It is well known that without the 4 basic human needs of excitement, affection, recognition and security; one cannot be psychologically sound or stable. In this movie; the psychological need of excitement is displayed where Rafael, Juan and Zerbino diverge from their usual routine and slide down the mountains after finding the tail end of the plane. They strived to find excitement on a small scale even in the horrific situation that they were placed in. The act of bonding, support and cooperation such as peer encouragement, hugs and optimistic discussion displayed acts of affection and recognition. The affection was widely spread through the kind words and caring actions, while recognition was also demonstrated by peer praise for logical and helpful suggestions. Such example is shown when Canessa praises Carlitos for the suggestion to use the plane seats to walk around the snow and the seat covers to use as blankets. The…
