In the movie Slumdog Millionaire, the director Danny Boyle explores the role of destiny in the life of the main character Jamal Malik, and also shows the significance of his success in the poverty of a developing country such as India. Jamal is a kind, honest and generous person who always does good things for others and the audience is positioned to value his character. In the movie Jamal endures horrific events throughout the impoverished conditions of his childhood but has the opportunity to be on a game show called, “Who wants to be a millionaire” where he faces the difficulties of the host to achieves immense success.
In the movie Slumdog Millionaire, the director Danny Boyle displays the role of destiny through the hard life of his protagonist, Jamal Malik by using cinematography, characterisation and plot to show the difficulties he faces throughout his life which eventually guides him to immense success. The director shows how fate and destiny guide Jamal and his brother Salim from danger and teach them valuable lessons to help Jamal win, Who wants to be a millionaire. It seems as though fate is watching over Jamal and Salim throughout the movie, keeping them away from danger and providing for them. They escape from the danger of Maman by climbing on board a train to make money and fall off to land in front of the Taj Mahal to make more money from tourists. This was out of their control, of all the places they could have landed, they landed at the Taj Mahal where they went on to make more money. Jamal’s difficult life has taught him many useful qualities that help him to achieve his success in the future. Things such as losing his mum and becoming orphans, being caught up in crime and having a brother with a wayward moral compass. The coincidence of these events happening to him has taught Jamal not to trust anyone and given him the instinct to get away from danger, as well as guide Jamal through the questions on the game show.
