Introduction

Rationale of the Study People often speak of personalities and how different people have different personalities. These differing personalities lead to a variety of personal preferences and ideas and views. Two common different personality traits that most people choose to categorize themselves as are introversion and extraversion. Introversion, or introverts as we call people who manifest this trait, is when a person is more "inward turning", focusing on emotions and thoughts rather than external stimulation (Cherry, n.d.). Extraverts/extroverts are very sociable and gregarious and enjoy being around other people (Cherry, n.d.). Being an extravert or an introvert can affect certain preferences people have in their lives. The obvious one being extroverts prefer being around people, whereas introverts enjoy their own company. Introversion and extraversion can also affect music preference. It's been found in some studies that extraverts have an affinity with upbeat, conventional music. The choice in music is often happy. Introverts tend to pick rock, indie, and classical music. There is also a preference for softer music in introverts (Grove, 1995). The researchers chose to perform this study in order to see if musical preference in instrumental music is chosen by introverts. This will help show if there are common musical preferences shared by most introverts. This study will help show if certain personality traits manifest in personal preferences, therefore making it possible to make assessments of a person's personality by viewing his or her likes or dislikes or taste in various things.

Review of the Study This study will look at introverts' preference for instrumental or non-vocal music and see if they prefer it to music that does have vocals.
Theoretical Framework One theory this study will be using is Carl Jung's introversion-extraversion theory. Briefly touched on in the rationale, introversion is turning energy into the self. It is having a preference to be alone and having solitary habits, usually doing more reflection and thinking than most. Many times, introversion can be seen as being shy or having an avoidant personality. This is not necessarily true, as many introverts can in fact socialize quite easily. It is just their inclination to be alone with their own thoughts. Extraversion is the opposite end of the spectrum. This is being sociable and outgoing. and drawing energy from interaction with others. Extraverts enjoy being part of the action and being around people. They often are friends with a lot of people.
Statement of the Problem This study will try to determine if introverts more likely than extraverts to listen to instrumental music or music without vocals.

Statement of Objectives The objective of this study is to see if introverts have a preference towards instrumental music and music without vocals.
Statement of Hypothesis
Ha: Introverts are more likely than extraverts to listen to instrumental music or music without vocals.
Ho: Introverts are not more likely than extraverts to listen to instrumental music or music without vocals.
Statement of Assumption This research paper assumes that most people, to some extent, regardless of being introverts or extraverts do listen to instrumental music or music without vocals. With this, the study tries to find out if there is a difference to the amount of instrumental music listened to by introverts and extraverts.
Statement of Definition In this study, instrumental music is a recorded musical piece without lyrics and with no vocals. Instrumental music is not limited to classical music. There will be other genres involved.
Significance of the Study This study will help show if certain preferences are common among certain personality types and will help provide people with a way of determining some aspects of a person's personality by studying what they listen to. It can be useful to people who need an idea of what a certain group likes, from a marketing perspective. It can also help in certain kinds of therapy by giving therapist an idea of the kinds of music to play to elicit certain emotions.

Scope and Limitations This study is limited to finding out if introverts listen to instrumental music more than extraverts do. It will not deal with how other aspects of personality affect music preference. Although there are other reasons for an individual picking certain different genres of music, such as background, past experiences, social circles, and the like, the researchers will not look into these factors as to why the subjects listen to the music that they do.

Research Methodology
Sampling
The sampling method the researchers will use is random sampling. This is to ensure that the results are not biased or skewed in any way.
Participants/Research Subject Due to practical reasons (such as time constraint and insufficient funds), the researchers will only be using college students from Silliman University to participate in this study.
Research Instruments/Materials The research instruments that the researchers will use for this study are a questionnaire to determine if the subjects are extraverts or introverts, an interview of some of the subjects, a sound system to play the selected musical tracks on, a test paper that the subjects can write on to indicate the tracks of music they preferred as we played them, as well as music that the subjects are to listen to. The questionnaire will be a simple 20-item True or False test to aid the researchers in classifying the subjects of the study as either introverted or extraverted. After this, the subjects will listen to the music that the researchers will play and the subjects will mark on a piece of paper which track they preferred. After this, the researchers will interview some of the subjects to get a better idea of why they picked those tracks.
Data Collection Procedures The data to be collected in this study will be collected via a questionnaire of questions slightly modified by the researchers to fit the needs of the study. The researchers will also record interviews they have with the subjects. First of all, the researchers made the questions based on the things they need to help them in their study. The researchers will make sure that the people receiving the questionnaires are people who are appropriate to the study. The researchers will give questionnaires to people to properly determine if they are either introverted or extraverted. When the researchers get the results of the first survey regarding the introversion or extraversion of the subjects, they will then give another survey to know further about the main purpose of the study, their musical preference. For the interviews, the researchers will look for bona fide subjects to be interviewed.

Treatment of Data The researchers will perform statistical tests on the data gathered. They will use the 2 sample t-test on the data gathered in order to analyze the data.
