Director - Chris Eyre

About the film...
Winner of the Audience Award and the Filmmaker's Trophy at the 1998
Sundance Film Festival, and the official selection for opening night of the
1998 New Director/New Films, SMOKE SIGNALS is one of the most unique films of the year. Filled with the rich aesthetics and beautiful mood of
American Indian culture, Sherman Alexie's story of friendship, love and loss (based on his award-winning short story, "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven") comes alive.

Set in Arizona, SMOKE SIGNALS is the story of two Indian boys on a journey. Victor (ADAM BEACH) is the stoic, handsome son of an alcoholic father who has abandoned his family. Thomas (EVAN ADAMS) is a gregarious, goofy young man who lost both his parents in a fire at a very young age. through storytelling,
Thomas makes every effort to connect with the people around him; Victor, in contrast, uses his quiet countenance to gain strength and confidence.

When Victor's estranged father dies, the two men embark on an adventure to Phoenix to collect the ashes.
Along the way, SMOKE SIGNALS illustrates the ties that bind these two very different young men and embraces the lessons they learn from one another.

The soundtrack is an evocative mix of traditional singing in Rwandan, Khmer, Yiddish, and Lakota. The music is matched to the imagery of its country of origin, though it too blends seamlessly from one site to the next. Despite the difference in the singers' languages and the instrumentation, the songs are surprisingly similar in their keening resonance.…

After watching 1976’s Best Picture nominees, I can now conclude that it seemed like a good year for film. I chose that year to focus on, because there were several movies that I have always wanted to see but never got the chance. For the most part, I liked the films. Two of them, I thought, were masterpieces. Another two were good. Lastly, one was subpar, but that’s to be expected. I absolutely loved Network. I thought the ensemble’s performances were amazing. Faye Dunaway’s performance in the movie was superb and deserved the Oscar. Additionally, Peter Finch’s performance nothing short of iconic. However, what really stole the show was excellent story and writing. It seems more relevant than ever. The craft that went into each scene was also…

On Monday December 11th, 2017, the Thornhill Music Department hosted its annual Winter Music Concert: Winterlude, at Thornhill United Church. As a member of the Senior Symphonic Wind Ensemble, I performed three songs with the band: The Incredibles by Michael Giacchino and arranged by Baul Murtha, Of Still Meadows and Mountains Bold by Carl Fagan, and Pirates of the Caribbean by Klaus Badel. Our band had been preparing these three songs for the majority of the first semester at after school repertoire classes on wednesdays. This year, we had a special guest band from Glen Shields Public School join our concert. In addition to their performance, many other ensembles from Thornhill Secondary School performed as well. In this reflection, I will…

The another major feature of this film is the soundtrack done by Bernard Hermann just before his death. The glorious music score by Hermann accompanies the light and shadows of the film, and raises the visual images to a higher level that reveals the innermost world of Travis to the audience. It turns the life of an ordinary cabbie into a somewhat heroic epic and a vivacious vigilante at the same time, and leads us to empathize this lonely, nondescript figure that can be everyone at…

Dead Island is a video game where players are trapped on an island resort and have to fight zombies in order to survive. The trailer for the game does not focus on how the game is actually played, which is the norm for game trailers, but instead sets up a narrative that is different from society’s typical view on zombies. The trailer also has more depth and emotional pull than most advertisements. It pulls at the heartstrings of its audience by using a touching visual narrative and accompanying it with emotional music. It is in our culture to create meaning and definition of things because we are afraid of the unknown. The Dead Island trailer alters our culture’s typical view of zombies and of advertisements, as there has not been a video game trailer similar to the narrative or musical accompaniment of the Dead Island trailer. This trailer makes a successful and compelling advertisement because the visual narrative and the music work together to create a memorable, emotionally jarring, and unique piece unlike other trailers.…

Greater combinations of sounds expressing a wider spectrum of tones, textures and volumes can be heard at the movies more than ever before, while behind the scenes, the number of personnel producing them has grown considerably. Moreover, this era has witnessed a proliferation of different artistic and professional approaches to sound. This thesis provides a detailed and wide-ranging picture of these developments and how they were ultimately affected by changes within the American film industry. Drawing…
