This new policy applies to students and staff, as well as any visitors on campus. ("EMCC Adopts Tobacco-Free Campus Policy") A tobacco-free campus is better because it is healthier, accessible, and more aesthetically pleasing. ("Core…
One could find a person smoking anywhere outside the buildings throughout college. This is one of the most mentioned topics when students and professors discuss about this new policy. It was something that went on very frequently. Many students, faculty, and visitors were passively smoking involuntarily for the mere reason that many others were smoking. In the other hand, we have the people who smoked, and were used to do it on campus for so long. This was a big and crucial change that they will have to adopt as a rule on campus.…

At West Virginia University, a proposal to ban smoking on campuses has been made. As with any new ban, there will be some controversy, however, smoking bans have become more and more popular in the recent years. West Virginia University and other Universities have a right to ban smoking because they must protect the rights of their non-smoking student’s health (Fortin, 2007). As of 2011, over 500 college campuses across the country have eliminated smokers, creating a better and healthier environment and even reducing the number of smokers (Steinberg, 2011). “Since a smoking ban was implanted on campus at Michigan State University, more students sought assistance in quitting (USA Today, 2011). If people wish to do harm to their bodies by using such a destructive substance, they should be forced to do so in an area far from others who do not wish to inhale these chemical toxins. “Comprehensive smoking bans can reduce secondhand smoke exposure among nonsmokers” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007). For every eight smoker's tobacco kills, one non-smoker is also killed by second hand smoke.´(American Lung Association) With a fact like that, it makes one really think about where they have been and how much smoke they have been subjected to. For me, attending college every day and walking through clouds of smoke to get from class to class really begins to put my health into perspective. Should a public place such as a college campus receive more rights than a facility such as a restaurant, department or grocery store? With an individuals health rights, the cleanliness around campus, and overall irritation of some of the students at risk, I believe college campus' should become America's new target against smoking and become smoke free.…
If a student is found smoking anywhere else, there should be some sort of penalty or punishment to them, including the understanding of how this is negatively affecting their lives. It should be something to scare the smoker, enough to shake that person a little bit. That person should have to do community service around campus by cleaning up cigarette butts to make the campus look cleaner. Also, a series of The Real Cost commercials can be shown. On the other hand, the approach can be taken of raising awareness instead of penalizing the smokers. Yes, there would be a fight if the campus started actually enforcing the rules, but isn’t that what rules are meant to do – stop people from doing an unwanted action? It is common knowledge that smoking cigarettes leads to lung cancer, so, why not raise awareness of lung cancer attracting those who…

“Dude, smoking is so 80´s!” said a student who was walking from the parking lot to the main entrance of the building to attend her class. I didn’t know her name or anything but it caught my attention what she said and how she said it. I found it quite amusing that she would use that expression to make her point. Smoking nowadays is not something strange or unheard of but it is a bit frowned upon. In the last decades, which have gone from chain- smoking and indoor smoking to fitness and go- green, smokers are sometimes viewed as ignorant and inelegant. Thirty years ago smoking was acceptable in Panama and it was even expected for people to smoke a cigar while discussing a business deal, playing cards or reading the newspaper. However, in the present day it is quite different. It has been forbidden to smoke at a lot of places, either inside or outside and people may get fined if they do light a cigarette in a non-smoking area. Nearly every future-smoker tries his first cigarette while in high school and then proceeds to smoke in college, as the CDC study showed.…
