Marina’s relationships changed a lot throughout the book, as some tried to help her but others gave up on her. The relationship with her father was immediately lost after he threw acid at her face but it was slowly gained back when Marina visited her father. Their relationship started improving because Marina gained enough confidence to start communicating with him through letters sent to him. The relationship with her mother was not very strong after the accident and slowly collapsed when her mother abandoned her. Her mother was selfish to give up on her like that but I understand she would have been dealing with her own traumas from the experience and seeing her daughter would have kept reminding her of it. Her grandma was accepting of Marina after the accident but she was not patient enough to maintain a relationship with her. Meanwhile at the boarding school, Marina ignored many of the other girls and she didn’t build any relationships. When her behaviour and feelings improved she realised that there were many girls in her dorm that were eager to be friends with her. Cathy was one of these girls and she and Marina built a very strong relationship towards the end of the book. This was after Cathy started writing notes to her, giving her gifts and inviting her to go over to her house during the holidays.
