SUMMARY OUTLINE CHAPTER 1
1. Definition of sociology: The study of human Society and the social structure. a. Greater Understanding of the social world. Questioning whats natural or taken for granted. How or why things are the way they are . i. The way societies and cultures develop and change over time. ii. Sociologist are interested in the connection between individuals and the world they live in b. Social Structures: Social structures and culture that influence the way we view and experience the world. Interactions and socialization impacts individuals and the world they live in. Interactions and socialization impacts individuals. i. Differences between society and cultures. (groups,organizations,institutions,corporations). ii. Society as a whole function. iii. Relation between societies differentiation. 2. What do sociologist study? a. Sports,crime,race,gender. i. Allow us to investigate the connection between what society makes of us and what we make of ourselves. ii. Help us look at a broader view of society. 3. Thinking like a Sociologist. a. Applying analytical tools to something you may have always done without much conscious thought. Reconsider your assumptions about society an question what you have taken for granted in order to understand the world around you. i. Makes familiar strange.
4. Ethnocentrism. a. Judging other cultures in terms of ones own. 5. Social Institution. a. Networks of structures in society that work ti socialize the groups of people within them (military,family,legal) i. A complex group of independent positions that preform a social role and reproduces themselves over time. ii. Any institutions in a society that works to shape behavior of the groups or people within it. 6. Social Identity. a. Define themselves in relationship to groups they are
