2. Primary and secondary groups are simple and straight-forward to understand. Summarize these two concepts then suggest how these categories are influenced by the changes in technology. In other words, have texting, facebooking, twittering, and other social media, change the differences between primary and secondary groups?
Primary groups as stated in chapter 5 pg 138 is a small group characterized by intimate, long-term, face to face associations and cooperation. By providing this primary groups have given you an identity, a feeling of who you are. Cooley said the family, the child's play group, and the neighborhoods or communities were the three basic primary groups. The groups are almost universal in all societies which give people their earliest and most complete experiences of social unity, are instrumental in developing a social life, and they promote the integration of their members in larger societies.
As humans we have developed deep emotional needs as well as a sense to belong and feelings of self-esteem. Primary groups are equipped to meet those basic needs and even make us feel appreciated and loved. Whether a primary group is functional or not their values and attitudes become a part of your identity and no matter how far you move from this group their roots will always remain inside of you.
Secondary groups on the other hand are much larger, more private, and more formal and impersonal. These groups are based on shared interest and activities and their members are likely to interact on the basis of specific statuses. Even though secondary groups are necessary they tend to not satisfy our needs for intimate association therefore, they tend to break down into primary groups. (pg.138)
I believe both of these groups are influenced by changes in technology. The
