Many students all around the country are discriminated against and treated differently based upon the color of their skin or the language(s) which they speak amongst peers of the same background and “children in ethnic groups must cope with biases and beliefs that are potentially limiting” (Huffington Post) Many a student is limited as to what they can achieve because everyone is placed into this mold based upon what stereotype they belong to and for many it is very hard to break out of that mold when in the classroom their being in that mold is built upon with a lack of classroom structure and the fact that based upon intelligence which is normally hand in hand with racial bias students are segregated. Turning a blind eye to a problem doesn’t make it go away, I believe that in order to solve these inequalities, people must be brought to understand and that “first, we recognize that stereotypes are present and affecting students because of the phenomenon of stereotype threat. Hispanics are lazy, Asian Americans are good in mathematics, women do poorly in science and math and African-Americans consistently underperform on standardized tests. This matters to my community because within my community is a multitude of cultures and ethnic groups, many of which I see separated and/or discriminated against from day to day in the classrooms around me and I know that it’s not right. If we as a whole, students and teachers alike work together to educate ourselves on the racism and inequity of our classrooms, I believe that we can come together and work on making our classrooms places of learning and equal opportunity where people can once again freely learn and not have to worry about any discriminatory acts being taken out upon them whether or not they’re intentional. My fellow teachers and classmates, if we come and work together to communicate better in terms of decreasing racism and stereotyping of all varieties, I believe that we can come up with a happier, more productive and better structured classroom environment that all students can thrive in and that is devoid of biases.
