After the events that took place on September 11th 2001, Islamophobia has been prevalent throughout the U.S. Islamophobia is a range of negative feelings that create prejudice and discrimination toward Muslims and their religion. Many Americans believe that Islam teaches hatred, violence, and intolerance. (book) Due to the events of 9/11, many Americans perceive middle eastern refugees who, come to America seeking asylum in an attempt escape death, violence, and persecution as terrorists who want to destroy America. Even Arab and Muslim Americans who have been citizens for years have been stereotyped and considered to be terrorists. Although some Muslim women choose not to adhere to the hijab many Muslim Americans choose to practice this custom. The hijab is best known to Americans as a head scarf that covers the head of a Muslim woman. What is not known to the majority of the American population is, the hijab refers to a variety of traditional garments not just the head scarf. Hijab may include a veil to cover the face or loose fitting clothing that cover all parts of the body except the hands and feet.
