Jean-Jacques Rousseau wanted the society as democratic as he could make it. The most famous quote from the Social contract was “Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains.” This means that men are not able to make certain decisions for themselves because of laws that are set in place.
They are chained to make certain mores because of the type of Government we have. Jean-Jacques Rousseau thinks the Social Contract is the best solution in defending and protecting members of the society and making sure that the men are still equally as free as they were before. He does not want them to feel like they are slaves to law. The Social Contract is a commitment and you do not obey that commitment. The sovereign make decisions that are best for the general will of the society and if you violate what the sovereign ask of you death penalty is recommended. If you follow the law of the general will you are assured to rights. There has to be participation in the government because if no one participates and goes to meeting then the society will not work. The general will is supposed to inform the society of laws created by the state. Each law has to obey the fact that they cannot take away anyone from the society’s
freedoms. Jean-Jacques Rousseau also played religion as a role. He believed that they should believe whatever religion they wanted to believe in in private but he thought that they should have an established religion within the state. He states that if interpretations of the social commitment do not uphold the articles of purely civil faith then you cannot be a good citizen of the faith nor be faithful. No one is required to follow the dogmas of purely civil faith but if you don’t you can be banned which is the death penalty. For a citizen to stay clear of the death penalty all they have to do is carrying the laws the sovereign give you, and being committed when the sovereign need your help. The Social Contract has a very big significance of Europe in the eighteen hundreds. The Social Contract has laid down the fundamentals for the government in the law in Europe. It has showed us the philosophy behind the democratic theory. When you read the Social Contract you start to become aware of different events that were happening in Europe in the eighteen hundreds. Jean-Jacques Rousseau had to be very careful what he said back then but he left a very heavy impact to the French society during the French Revolution.
