theory states that power is what decides which role is more important. While each role is distinctly important, the rich and powerful seem to take the stage at the expense of the poor. The people who are at the bottom do not get a fair chance to compete and are merely stuck at the bottom. I feel a bit torn between the two, because I also want to believe that if someone really wants to succeed, they can do so through hard work, but I also know that it is much easier for someone who comes from a wealthy family, to easily transition into a role that is considered to be at the top, such as a doctor. Furthermore, I would have to say that the conflict theory is more accurate than the functional theory because although some roles may seem more vital than others, they each play a vital role in how our society works as a whole, no matter how big or small. Teachers are no less important than doctors, and without teachers to teach our children, one might never have the opportunity to become a doctor without the guidance and teaching needed to pursue a career as a doctor. We live in a very competitive world. Each role one takes has a particular effect on society. Not all of us will get a fair chance to compete and those at the top of the social hierarchy use their power to prevent the poor from obtaining a greater share of the rewards.
