fifty percent of the class mind was already made up when it came the topic of gay marriage. No matter what facts or stats were brought up they refused to even budge on their prior beliefs. Chapter 15 covers the Elaboration Likelihood Model, developed by Richard Petty and John Cacioppo. This model was created in an attempt to explain how we process and use different stimuli to change our attitudes about something. The Central Route theory greatly touches on this idea. The Central Route theory covers on how much an individual thinks about an issue relevant to the argument at hand. Growing up I always had an Xbox for a gaming system and I was extremely bias with the system when comparing it to a PlayStation. However, when the PlayStation 4 came out it had free online play as oppose to the Xbox so I really had to contemplate if I wanted to stay with the system I was comfortable with or with having this new information change my system.
Chapter 16 is about the Cognitive Dissonance Theory. The CDT is the distressing mental state cause by the inconsistency between a person’s belief and an action. The theory was associated with how even though people are aware if they smoke it may cause lung cancer they decided to disregard the statics. After the facts were uncovered people just decided to cope with the facts and say to themselves “Well this won’t happen to me.” I seem to do the same thing when it comes to riding in the car. No matter how man car crashes I see or signs I pass I still have a hard time forcing myself to put a seatbelt on.
