“Groups of persons banded together for common purposes having rights, privileges, liabilities, goals, or objectives distinct and independent from those of individual members”("Social Institutions",1996). Social Institutions do not only exist within criminal justice, but in many other fields such as government, media, and the economy. Other well known social institution are schools, churches, and even our own families. Social institution must accomplish five major task in order to successful. The five major tasks include; production, distribution, and consumption as one, socialization, social control and participation, and mutual support (Lyman & Potter, 2007). One of the main tasks that has to be met is stability, and this is needed in any major corporation or organization. Stability helps maintain individuals to run the operation regardless of what kind of operation. As an example for the government, the United States is consistently replacing individuals with the use of elections. In illegal activities individuals are killed off or let go if they are not meeting the needs of the leader for the good of the operation.
Applicable Theories There are many theories associated with organized crime, but we will only discuss the most applicable to social institutions. The one theory that seems to stand out most is the Social Control Theory. This theory states that the community, family, and the bond with society prevents or encourages entry into a life of crime. This seems most applicable because most organize crime is set up very similarly to the way a family functions. They are such tight knit groups of individuals that are working to accomplish something as a whole regardless if it is a criminal act or not.
Conclusion
Within organized crime there is an obvious social structure that keeps the group well organized. If you look back at the 1950 's mob stories you can see an example of the family like structure of these crime groups. Throughout this paper social institutions was defined and was related to organized crime. Also the theory that most stuck out was the Social Control Theory because of the way that it operates. Many people do not see how social institutions relate to organized crime, but after discussing it more in detail it seems to make more sense as to how it does relate.
