POLICY ANALYSIS / POOR KIDS BBC PART 3
This essay will critically analyse the social policy issues and social work challenges raised in
the film “Poor kids”. It will also highlight the social issues and problems raised in the
film such as poverty ,unemployment,poor housing conditions ,social exclusion and inequality
rights and entitlement . It will further discuss how social policies such as the welfare reform
bill and austerity measures of the government has resulted in putting the needs of vulnerable
children and families into deserving or less deserving and its impact on social work practice

Social policy relates academically to other social science disciplines like politics, law
sociology; however as an academic discipline its distinctive from other social science subjects
( Bochel et al 2009 ) Social policy can also be the policies and actions of the government
towards societal problems in order to bring well being in society ( Baldock et al 2012 )
Thompson (2015) refers to social policy as both an academic subject and governmental
policies aimed at tackling social issues.All the above definitions have a central theme of the
efforts the government or state undertakes in redistributing wealth and promoting social
wellbeing.
Social work is underpinned by values and laws . social work and social policy work
hand in hand to address societal issues,how welfare is administered and mainly involved in
providing services to society in areas like housing ,education,health and social protection
( Baldock et al 2012). Social workers work with vulnerable individuals and families to alleviate
poverty and to promote social well-being. In order to undertake their roles of working
