There are a number issues facing the United Sates that settle squarely into areas of social welfare, and poverty is one that garters the most concern. The notion of poverty, as detailed by the United States Census Bureau, shows in 2010 that 46.9 million people suffered in poverty. This was the fourth consecutive annual recorded increase in numbers of people in poverty since 2007. The poverty rate for the US population in 2010 was 15.1 percent, an increase from 12.5 percent held in 1997. Poverty rates affect minorities in 2010 disproportionately with Hispanics at 26.6, and African Americans at 27.4 percent. Native Americans have a higher recorded poverty rate at 29.1 percent in 2012. This is higher then the national average, and is comparable, with respect, to African American and Hispanics. Focusing on the state of Native Americans and its causal relationships to social strain, it is demonstrable that this population is at risk for unemployment, food insecurity, and sustained high levels of poverty.
