the government every month for money.
When the great depression took place in the 1930s families were desperate. Due to the stock market crash it sent everyone to a panic, they were selling everything for money in order to feed them and them family as well. The welfare system first came into action because unemployed citizens had needed federal assistance to escape poverty after the great depression. The welfare system supplies families with services for example food stamps, Medicaid, and housing among others. The welfare system is not bad, it’s actually a great program. What has happened with this system is that people are too dependent on it. At some point in time the welfare program belonged to the federal states for a while then due to the system being abused by people all over, the federal government decided to hand it over to the states hoping that they would somehow have it under control but unfortunately it’s gotten worse. And then there’s people who actually use welfare because they actually need it, that’s a good thing. “The United States has spent more than $3.5 trillion trying to ease the plight of the poor “(Michael Tanner). I believe people should have to work or get an education while receiving benefits. Nobody should get to get a free ride through life. And that’s part of the reason why these people getting these various benefits feel the need that they don’t have to work because they getting money from the government. “The origins of the modern social welfare system can probably be traced to the Social Security Act of 1935. Best known for establishing Social Security and unemployment insurance, that law, passed during the heart of the Depression, also contained a number of means-tested joint federal-state programs to provide temporary assistance to certain categories of the poor. Those programs included Old Age Assistance, Aid to the Blind, and--most important--Aid to Dependent Children, the forerunner of Aid to Families with Dependent Children” (Tanner). The welfare system has grown so much since the great depression till present day. “Approximately 5 million families receive AFDC. Nearly one of every seven American children is in a family receiving AFDC. More than 20 percent of all children born in the late 1960s have spent at least one year on welfare; more than 70 percent of African-American children born during the same period have done so. And the situation is growing worse. More than 30 percent of all children born in 1980 will spend a year on welfare, and more than 80 percent of the African-American children “(Tanner), the majority of the people on welfare are blacks and Hispanics. These people are born into the welfare system but no one makes an attempt to lift a hand and work for the family to have a self-income and not depend on others tax dollars.” There is evidence that welfare itself may prevent people from moving out of poverty. Richard Vedder and Lowell Galloway, for example, found that only 18.3 percent of poor people receiving welfare benefits in 1987 moved out of poverty, while 45 percent of poor people who never received welfare escaped poverty” (Robert Rector). Although the welfare system helps people escape poverty it still gives people the option to not work and that’s the main reason why people are basically getting free money because the government just gives them tax dollars that people work long hours day to day, and these people are depending on that money.
“Welfare: Food stamps 292, Medicaid 200, Gross monthly cash value 952, Net monthly cash value $952. Work: Wages $817 ,Food stamps 173 ,Medicaid 200 ,Child-care grant 384 ,Gross monthly cash value 1,574 ,Less tax (62) ,Less job-related expenses (100) ,Less child-care costs (400) ,Net monthly value $1,012 “(Rector) . People on welfare get almost as much as a person who works minimum wage, it’s like 100 off. It makes no sense to allow welfare to exist because they are not even moving a finger and them almost getting what a person who works minimum wage, long hours and rough days. That’s not fair to the people who work and there hard earned dollars are going to people who don’t work for that welfare money. Welfare is clearly not working and seriously needs to change. The welfare system is beyond unfair to the taxpayers who are paying for failed programs and supporting people as well. Even though you have a right to claim taxes every year and you get some money back but still the fact that people who are lazy and don’t want to look for a job is
getting your hard earned money isn’t fair at all. Because the money could go to something else, the welfare system is failing and the government needs to just end it for once and for all. And then to the people who don’t abuse the welfare it’s not fair to them because they actually need that extra money to get them through in getting the bills paid because they have low income. Also putting food on the table for their family is a stretch because of low income with money and bills to be paid each month so the welfare system would be good for them. But on top of that there’s people who literally abuse the system. Although it’s like maybe 90% of blacks/Hispanics on welfare they feel they could just be on this system from the government and not work. For example selling marijuana, robbing. Even though crime happens everywhere but it’s mainly from these people who abusing the system, and then wanna ask for more money.
As a result the welfare system should just be ended all together. The reason why is because people are way too dependent on it and it’s not fair that tax payers have to support these people on the system that don’t even move a finger to look for a job. Also the amount of people that are coming into the welfare system, the number just keep increasing.
