Does Welfare Feel Ashamed

Welfare was created in 1935 to provide for the families in need of food, clothing, and shelter, but today it has become a large, controversial topic. Some people argue that it is ridiculous that some people can’t take care of themselves and must rely on everyone else’s money to support them. Those people cause those on welfare to become ashamed of themselves. I believe people on welfare should not feel ashamed because some do hold a job if not multiple, but still cannot provide for themselves and others have certain disabilities that restrict them from getting a job and supporting themselves. Most people on welfare are not unemployed, but have one job, if not two. Although many accusations are made every day about people on welfare being
lazy that statement is false. According to Groundswell.org, 74% of the families of welfare are working families. It isn’t the fact that the people won’t get up and get a job, it’s that the job isn’t enough to provide for themselves, more or less their families. Some of the jobs that these people occupy do not come with most of the benefits that others may offer. For example, 61% of Medicaid for the poor went to working families, who did not possess those benefits with their job. Sometimes having a job isn’t enough to provide for a family. Disabilities come in various forms and develop in different ways. Many people have certain physical and mental disabilities that hinder them from obtaining a job. Many people who can’t hold a job that are disabled can apply for disability welfare and receive those benefits that most jobs offer. Being ashamed of a situation that you have absolutely no control over is ridiculous. Everyone reaches a down point in their life where they need some type of help and receiving that help is perfectly acceptable.
