Ever since there has been a growing gap between the classes of rich and poor, many are starting to adopt behavioral poverty, which is irregular behaviors. Behavioral poverty is a result to the lenient welfare system that is supposed to be a helping-hand, but is instead a hand-holding program. Assistance has been given continually to participants without question by the government. Welfare has allowed participants to "receive cash assistance indefinitely. However, some policymakers questioned the logic of paying able-bodied citizen... to stay out of the workforce" (Muennig). If the government denies those who abuse the system and accepts only the neediest families, debt can stop being a degradation to the welfare system. There are people that sit at home that are not even trying to look for a job because they are content with essentially abusing the welfare system. People can easily fill an application out for welfare programs to begin receiving benefits in little to no time. With longer and more information necessary for the applications, the amount of families eligible for support will decrease. Policies are in effect however, they are not enforced. Time limits of of how much a person receives while not being employed should be more strictly required so more participants will search for jobs. If enforced, welfare will be used for what it was created for instead of it being an abused
