Societal Oppression In Today's Society
Malcolm X once warned of the power of the media, “societal oppression” and its ramifications. Ignominiously, within today's society young people live up to labels handed to them, and wear them as badges of honour, suffer poverty, oppression within the education and penal system, and are constantly fighting for status in a very bigoted society, where the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. The author argues that a chauvinistic society, the lack of culpability, uninspiring media reporting which remain relentless, and the antagonistic systems which remain aloof to socially excluded young people, have contributed to the rise of the ”new aged gangs”, thus creating a “them and us” culture. A culture with the ability to become a social norm.

Oppression is a significant issue that has been growing in discourse as of late. As time progresses, the way people are treated and the opinions they hold change. When there is a group of people who have their rights changed, it will cause other groups to believe they are being cheated out of chances the privileges those people are allowed access to. While this may be accurate in rare cases, it is also difficult to argue strongly on the side of the people who have been, and still are considered to be in positions of power. Discrimination is an entirely different realm than systematic oppression, and people who are in these positions of power would simply not be able to experience these things. Examples that are becoming widely known to the…

Social oppression is socially supported mistreatment and exploitation of a group or category of people by anyone. Oppressors usually suffer from the need to be Socially Dominant over others in order to retain power or assert power (Sidanius, Jim. Social Dominance: An Intergroup Theory of Social Hierarchy and Oppression. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 2001.). Social dominance is commonly the root cause of social oppression. The United States has always claimed the moral high ground on human rights and equality, yet our history is fettered with situations of discrimination and oppression of many different demographics. Our American culture is greatly diverse and continuously splintering off into new groups and subcultures with many different lifestyles and beliefs. The government has always had to consider religious, cultural, and biological differences in the population when writing laws to promote health, safety and prosperity for all citizens. Currently three major groups within our society are struggling against social oppression to retain or gain their human rights and civil liberties. Many forms of Social oppression are occurring within our society today, women in many states are struggling to control their reproductive rights, while men and women are fighting for their right to marry who they love, and minorities are being racially profiled and murdered for wearing certain styles of clothes or being assumed as criminals.…

When a gang becomes a genuine gang it is at this time when they become a great concern as a threat to society. The formation, expansion and the consequent actions of gangs greatly affect society. It has been consistently found that gangs are normally linked to serious crimes and violence (Decker, Melde & Pyrooz, 2013). As these gangs become constant and stable fixtures in their community they become a permanent option for marginalized…

Great response Quinne! You have provided some interesting reflections on the idea of whiteness. Your statement “racism is a system of oppression” is extremely true. We live in a world where societal inequalities exist and where races are discriminated against, not treated fairly, and oppressed. In addition, there are also groups of people who are advantaged and receive benefits and privileges that are unearned and unfair. Wouldn’t life be great if we valued and respected people regardless of identities such as gender, race, age, religion, and nationality? In this dream world, everyone would have equitable access to resources and opportunities and would be able to live out their full potential. Sadly, this is the not the case resulting…

“The debasement of our culture, of which gangsta rap is a big part, has coarsened children in general and put high-risk kids in a dangerous place.Taking drugs, carrying guns, and disrespecting human beings is now not only socially acceptable in many situations, it is downright glamorous”(O’Reilly). This shows how we as a society can reduce one aspect of violence in a violent society and expect real results. Youth violence will not be seriously reduced without violence in other aspects of our culture being addressed. In the same vein, modifying media violence alone will not have much effect but to ignore it will make efforts on other fronts less successful. Despite the fact that the media have limited independent effects on youth violence, we need to expand the focus on them.…

The main backbone of America is not the corporations, the government or states. It is the people but one class of people created America from the ashes of the Civil War. The worker helped create America into what it is today, but they suffered oppression from both corporations and government. The workers had to fight for their liberty and were not aided by the government until they got their attention. Liberty is the ability of one having a voice or a choice and not being prosecuted or silenced for doing nothing wrong.…

I am tired. If mankind is wise then it should be tired as well. My exhaustion derives from the endless conflicts the human race has faced. Often throughout history we have faced conflicts with carrying a big stick and wars. The problem with those approaches is that the little that they attempt to solve is only effective in situations where threats are tangible. In other words, when the enemy has a face. When it comes to inequality based on genders, races, and social constructs, we have nobody to blame. There is no villain that our heroes can eliminate resulting in the end of the problem. Instead invoking social changes takes time and effort faced by much adversity from resistance to change.…

Discrimination is still among our world today, and stays a constant issue. Many people would argue this accusation, and try to believe that the world today is better than it was years ago, but the fact is that it is still the same. Discrimination is not just among races or ethnic groups, it is among different genders, religions, and marriage partners. Today people argue about discrimination all of the time. Why is it still among us? What can be done? Why don’t we just let it be? But, in fact, none of these questions are ever solved and might never be answered because of the contrasting beliefs of society. Society has put discrimination into stereotyping and many other different forms, but the point is that discrimination is here to stay and…

The United States of America was founded on the concept that all men are created equal; however, it has taken us until the last fifty years to make significant strides toward equality for many minority groups. Nearly 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans in Southern states still inhabited a vastly unequal world of disenfranchisement, segregation and various forms of oppression, including race-inspired violence (www.history.com, 2015). In 1960, the black Americans made up 10.5% of the total population and 55% of them were living in poverty (http://www.shmoop.com/, 2015). This is just one example of how a century of oppression can affect a whole demographic.…

One of the most thwarting situations is realizing that your fate has been decided before you get the opportunity to open your mouth. Being an African American teenage girl, there is already the expectancy that you are illiterate, incapable, and shallow. Often times we do not get the opportunity to achieve our own life stories because someone else has already assumed them for us. We are raised to believe that our elders can predict our mistakes because they have already committed them themselves. We spend the majority of our lives attempting to live better lives than those who came before us instead of dominating our own. Some of our deepest inner and outer most struggles uproot from three simple characteristics which we will never be able to control: our ethnicity, our gender, and our maturity.…

There has been an alarming rate of deaths amongst teenage black boys. For the past decade Britain has had the largest rate of teenage deaths amongst teenagers both black and white, however this number has been much higher of amongst teens of Black decent, may have questioned the reason for this with statements like’ I blame the parents’, ‘I blame the education system’. But what are the main causes for these senseless acts of violence that are taking the lives of the next generation. If you concentrate on the series of murder victims in London it is clear to see that these victims are of Black Caribbean and Black African heritage. But these killings do not happen because the youth of today have become more heartless and senseless about the welfare of others. There is a narrative around violence that is being perpetuated most strongly within Black communities in London. Examples of this narrative could include; a sense that protective factors such as policing and criminal justice are no longer supporting or protecting…

Oppression signifies an authority of a dominant group over a monitory group, disengaging the minority group from society. It involves mistreatment of a group, which is founded by individual stereotypes, systematic beliefs and attitudes, which become justification for continued mistreatment of members of these groups. This paper will review three forms of oppression and how the dominant members in society use their power and privilege to influence to continue the cycle of oppression.…

The patriarchal society in which we live has systematically oppressed women for centuries. It is not until extremely recent history, with the Women’s Liberation Movement, that women have been able to take meaningful strides towards a more equal and just society. We have come a long way since that time, women can now vote, work, practice politics and live independently of men: it seems as though we have come very close to the equality that we have worked so hard to achieve. However that statement has proven to be incredibly false. If we examine Marilyn Frye’s metaphor of the bird cage and apply it to the changes that have been brought upon our society we can see how the oppression of women not only still exists, but has gained new dimensions. By inspecting the progress women have made to integrate into patriarchal society we can see that we have succeeded to remove some of the wires that have held us back from escaping the cage, however the removal of these wires has added new responsibilities for the female gender and it is these new responsibilities that have added completely new wires to our cages. By examining Marilyn Frye’s article Oppression we will examine why she believes that “women are oppressed as women” (Frye, p.16) and why it is that, even though men face barriers and difficulties, she believes that they are not “oppressed as men” (Frye, p.16)…
