Society before the civil war was already rough and divided if it wasn't because of trade, tariffs it was because of state rights, and if not that because of differences between north, and southern states. As a society, they all were on different sides, but violence was one of the only common answers because they both decided to go to war after the Confederates struck the Union at Charleston Bay.
