Sociological Approach To Crime Essay
According to the sociological perspective, crime is an antisocial act of such a nature that is repression is necessary for the preservation of the existing of the existing social order. From this viewpoint, crime is primarily an offense against human relationships, and secondarily a violation of the law (4). While sociological theories continue to develop, new and emerging perspectives ask to be recognized. (22) The discipline of sociology has had the most impact on theoretical understandings of crime and crime causation, so many theoretical explanations of criminal behavior are routinely couched in the language of social science. Although different kinds of social structure theories have been advanced to explain crime, they all have one thing …show more content…
Seen this way, crime is a problem for both the individual and for society. Two major ideas characterized early psychological theories personality and behaviorism. Personality theory includes personality disturbances, the process of moral development and diseases of the mind. Behaviorism also is known as behavior theory examined social learning with an emphasis on behavioral conditioning. Conditioning is a psychological principle that holds that behavior can change through rewards, punishment, or association with others. Hans J. Eysenck a British psychologist published a book which he explained crime as the result of fundamental personality characteristics, or traits (133). According to Eysenck, psychotics are the most likely to be criminal because they combine high degrees of emotionalism with similarly high levels of extroversion individuals with these traits it makes it difficult to socialize causing them to not respond well to the external environment. This approach envisions a complex set of drives and motives, operating from recess deep within the personality to determine behavior.
