about things that happen in society that have led to some sort of outcome, and recognizing what types of causes led to that outcome. The things that shape these outcomes are social norms, a person’s motivation, time period, social class, and a person’s in groups and outgroups. So everything we do and will do in the future is shaped by all of these factors and eventually will result in some outcome. The sociological imagination allows people to see things in the view of society, rather than seeing everything from their own personal experiences. This concept has been so important in my experience in this course because it has allowed me to open my eyes and see how the choices I make affect everyone else and what sort of outcomes will come out of them. Looking back now, I realize that when I first started this course I had a very narrow mindset.
I never really thought about how I affect society and how society has an effect on me. But, this course has aided in the development of my own sociological perspective because it helps me to understand how society is important in shaping my everyday life. I learned that society has many different symbols that are meaningful to each of us. A very important concept I took away from this course is the concept of the Conflict Theory. Learning about this theory really opened my eyes and made me realize that certain parts of our society are in conflict with each other and basically rely on each other to function. I believe that society will always have a lower class and upper class and that they both rely on one another. This course has helped me see society in a new light and really learn that every single thing that happens in our day to day life have an impact on us. I have learned about the social rules that guide our lives, different cultures, races, sexualities, education, and religion. The sociological imagination is so important to me because it taught me to think about everything I go through in my life and connect it to a bigger
picture. According to Sociology expert Ashley Crossman, in an online article, “To have a sociological imagination, a person must be able to pull away from the situation and think from an alternative point of view. This ability is central to one's development of a sociological perspective on the world.” This course has helped me develop my own sociological imagination and use it to think about the society I live in. Before taking this course, I thought of society as just the place I live in. I never really thought about how it shaped my life or how I shaped it with my actions. I can honestly say that I will use this information in my daily life to think from a different point of view. I have become more aware of how my culture, job, family, social class, and associates shape my life in good and bad ways. I now look at society as the force that affects my biography and issues.
