The Amish Society
John A. Hostetler wrote a passage titled “Amish Society” in this chapter he analyzes the Amish community and how the modern community sees them, he is introducing more knowledge in order to sway perspectives of these views. In Hostetler’s words, “The serious reader will want to transcend the scientific orientation and ask, what is the meaning of the Amish system? What, if anything, is it trying to say to us” (Hostetler 75)? How the Amish are viewed by the modern society progresses as the modern world advances. The Amish are thought of as “relics of the past”, meaning they live in an old-fashioned lifestyle, one that everyone in the modern society shared before the Industrial Revolution. The Amish have lived amongst the modern world for centuries, Hostetler mentions, “A century ago, hardly anyone knew the Amish existed. A half-century ago they were viewed as an obscure sect living by ridiculous customs…”(Hostetler 74). This is an example of how the Amish community has become popularly know amongst the modern America while also showing past views on their beliefs and customs. The difference in the modern lifestyle and the Amish lifestyle lies within the technological advances, conveniences, and worldly distractions. The Amish have been known to rid of all worldly luxuries that could potentially distract them from their prayers, devotions, and close ties with the entire community. While the modern world has spent years inventing and perfecting technology as an aide to make life simple for the American citizens, the Amish community have spent years living what they know as a simple way of life. Hostetler reports, “The merging of diverse peoples into a common mass has produced tension among members of the minorities and the majority a like” (Hostetler 74).
