Soda Is Bad For You
According to statistics, in the past couple year’s soft drinks have become much more consumed by Americans. Although most people enjoy the taste of these sugary drinks most research shows that they are bad for you. Drinking soda can cause the enamel on your teeth to dissolve, take calcium out of your bones and cause them to weaken, cause a person to become overweight possibly obese, and cause acne breakouts. Whether you call it soda, pop, a tonic, coke, or a soft drink they all can have the same harmful effects on the human body.
In one regular sized can of pop there is usually 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. Most people normally wouldn’t consume sugar like that plain but when its in a drink in can be consumed pretty easily. “More sugar brings more risk of decay” says Dr. Sara Po from Family Cosmetic Dentistry, but she’s not the only one that thinks that!
Almost all pop has some sort of sugar or high fructose corn syrup in it; this is known to damage teeth. “The sugar in carbonated soft drinks is a primary source for cavities. Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar and make an acid that dissolves tooth enamel” says Dentist Howard S. Glazer. Howard Glazer is the president of the Academy of General Dentistry and has been a dentist for over 15 years.

Not only do regular sodas affect a person’s teeth negatively, diet soda does also. According to the Colgate Dental Resource Center, “Soft drinks and diet soft drinks have emerged as one of the most significant dietary sources of tooth decay, affecting people of all ages. Acids and acidic sugar byproducts in soft drinks soften tooth enamel, contributing to the formation of cavities”. Acid and acidic sugar byproducts are both found in many different types of soda.
