Sofia Coppola
Sofia Carmina Coppola (born 1971) is an American film auteur, actress, producer and screenwriter. As the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia faced a sizable challenge establishing her own identity as a director when she first started making feature films in 1999. Since then, she has not only emerged from the shadow of her famous father, but she has become a bearer of quality in the moviemaking industry.
As the daughter of set decorator/artist Eleanor and director Francis Ford Coppola (Godfather and Apocalypse Now); Sophia was continually surrounded by creative and artistic people. Her childhood consisted of appearing in her father’s films and helping out on the set; particularly with the costumes. Sofia has a distinct interest in fashion having friends such as marc Jacobs and interning with Chanel, she also has an interest in the indie music scene which becomes apparent in her song choices for Marie Antoinette.
The films which Sofia are well known for are Lost in Translation (1999) which received a box office Worldwide of $119,723,856 Virgin Suicides (2003) receiving a box office Worldwide of $10,409,377, and Marie Antoinette (2006) receiving a box office Worldwide of $60,917,189.
She had received awards mainly for all of her directed movies as well as many nominations. Lost in Translation won the; 2003 Academy Awards Best Original Screenplay, 2005 César Awards Best Foreign Film, 2004 Golden Globe Awards Best Screenplay and 2003 NYFCC Award for Best Director. Virgin suicides received the 2001 MTV movie award for Best New Filmmaker, also the 2001 Young Hollywood award for Best Director. Marie Antoinette Won the Academy Award for Costume Design. Along with Best Art Direction at the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards. Marie Antoinette also won Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design at both the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards and the Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards.
