In Black Swan Green the chapter “Solarium” and in Letters to a Young Poet, “Letter One” the authors develops similar central ideas using different literary techniques. In “Solarium” by David Mitchell, Jason Taylor struggles with his stammer, the young artist uses poetry as his voice. Jason summits his poetry to the vicar in hopes that it will be posted in the parish magazine. Madame Crommelynck, a sort of “middle man” in this scenario summons Jason to her vicarage. There Madame offers her very frank opinion on beauty and how it is to be used in poetry. In “Letter One” Franz Kappus an aspiring poet called on Rainer Rilke for advice and critics on his poems. Mitchell and Rilke both develop their ideas through their language however their methods are slightly different. In”Letter One” Rilke uses an abundance of figurative language that expresses his ideas and beliefs. On the other hand Mitchell using a collection of strong statements and specific word choice that help develop his clear central idea in the chapter “Solurim”. Rilke's central idea beauty is within is showcase his belief that beauty flows from the creator and that is how true art is formed. Rilke said “For the creator must be a world or himself and must find everything in himself”(Rilke, 3). In Black Swan Green, Mitchell’s central idea is focused to one point made in the text “beauty is”(Mitchell, 7).
