In “Solarium” by David Mitchell, Jason Taylor struggles with his stammer, the young artist uses poetry as his voice. Jason summits his poetry to the vicar in hopes that it will be posted in the parish magazine. Madame Crommelynck, a sort of “middle man” in this scenario summons Jason to her vicarage. There Madame offers her very frank opinion on beauty and how it is to be used in poetry. In “Letter One” Franz Kappus an aspiring poet called on Rainer Rilke for advice and critics on his poems. Rilke doesn't offer any direct criticism, however he offers his beliefs concerning beauty and art. Both Madame

Mitchell and Rilke both develop their ideas through their language however their methods are slightly different. In”Letter One” Rilke uses an abundance of figurative language that expresses his ideas and beliefs. On the other hand Mitchell using a collection of strong statements and specific word choice that help develop his clear central idea in the chapter “Solurim”. Rilke's central idea beauty is within is showcase his belief that beauty flows from the creator and that is how true art is formed. Rilke said “For the creator must be a world or himself and must find everything in himself”(Rilke, 3). In Black Swan Green, Mitchell’s central idea is focused to one point made in the text “beauty is”(Mitchell, 7). He believes beauty cannot be created by an artist, beauty is in the work that artists creates. Madame Crommelynck use an example of a potter and a vase. She say, “Your potter has made the vase yes, but has not made the beauty”(Mitchell, 7). Both Rilke and Mitchell develop their central ideas in order to teach the young poets a lesson on

It was in February of 1903 that a young literary hopeful by the name of Franz Xaver Kappus reached out to not-yet-esteemed poet Rainer Maria Rilke in search of criticism and career advice. In what seems like an effort to cast him aside, Rilke refused to give Kappus criticism and advised him to instead search internally in order to truly reach poetic esteem. Whether or not Rilke initially wanted to take Kappus under his wing, he had acquired a new pen pal. That letter was the first of many to deliver Rilke’s ideas on topics such as Nature, creativity, sexuality, and solitude and how the artist utilizes them to create true masterpieces as well as find his or her place in society.…

The first descriptions in the poem are of savagery, ‘the thing, rough and crudely done, cut in coarse stone,' these are to signify how imperfect the object is, made by an imperfect being thus indicating the objects inferiority. But, conversely these images could also indicate a certain sense of simplicity within the object; it is not needlessly ornate. The next are of disdain for the object, ‘spitefully placed aside, as merest lumber,' the attitude of the collector lends to the idea that they prefer grandioso works of art, and the attitude that beauty is more defining in a pieces value than either historical value or the meaning of a piece. These feelings of discontent…

Through reading excerpts from Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke and Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, Rilke’s counsel to the young poet applies greatly to the main character in David Mitchell’s story, Jason Taylor. Both of the works are to poets from someone who is giving advice, however, Jason Taylor does not seek advice, while the young poet does. The advice given to the poets is similar and helpful to their cause.…

“Letter One” of Letters to a Young Poet by poet Rainer Maria Rilke is a letter to a young poet about how he should write poetry, and more specifically, how to use beauty when writing poetry. A young poet had previously requested Rilke’s advice on how to create and write poetry. Rilke responded by telling the poet that he should descend into himself and question whether he feels a need to write in order to determine whether he should write at all. Black Swan Green chapters “Hangman” and “Solarium” by David Mitchell are about a boy, Jason Taylor, who has trouble speaking because of his stammer. Ironically, he writes poetry that is published, which becomes a way for him to express himself in ways he could not by speaking. He writes his poetry under the pseudonym Eliot Bolivar because he is ashamed of the fact he writes poetry Jason ends up meeting a woman, Eva van Outryve de Crommelynck, to discuss his poetry how he should write it, especially through beauty. Over the course of both texts, Rilke and…

“WC”, written in romantic style, emphasises his inner turmoil through an array of poetic techniques entrenched within a cynical yet lethargic tone. “Nine and fifty swans” exemplifies the misery of his single life by juxtaposing the strength in unity of the swans. This enduring symbol of swans in his poetry evokes empathy towards his depressed state as he continues to elevate the imagery of the swans by juxtaposing their unity “cold companionable streams” to his solitude.…

Again, there is still beauty in the creature although he is not what his potential would haveallowed him to be. Instead he was forced into a dull existence, but there is still a flash of hope in him that "rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles, plunges into the heart and is gone.". The scene with the iron bars holding the panther in the zoo makes me think that is how Rilke views humans in the city, blocked in and deprived of any mental stimulation until their vision has "grown weary" as well. "The Swan" is different from both previous poems however, in the fact that the swan isn't broken, but simply isn't as beautiful until it gets into the water.…

Reading and writing is essential to our lives; we read and write every day in at least one way, shape, or form. Just about any educated person can read and write, but reading and writing on a scholarly or literary level demands a higher level of knowledge and understanding. There are a wide variety of aspects of literature to take into account when writing literature. Some aspects are familiar to most people: theme, setting, and characterization, among others. Meanwhile, there are certain aspects of literature that require a higher level of understanding such as style, tone, atmosphere, and figurative language. Every writer has a different method of writing, but for the most part, writers use a general structure when composing a new piece of literature. Each type of literary piece (narratives, poems, essays, speeches) has a different structure due to different reasons - each category of literature has one or more ways to shape and form the writing, but it depends on the overall purpose and type of publication. Critically thinking about literary writing is less tricky than it sounds. Critical thinking merely requires deep thought and examination. Challenging assumptions and observing different perspectives is the most important part of literary critical thinking.…

The meaning of a word or a phrase can be funnel in many ways throughout the author’s text. However, it can also be funnel through the same way, even though the authors may be completely different. In Letters to a Young Poet “Letter One” Franz Kappus a nineteen-year-old student, wrote a letter to Rainer Maria Rilke, in the pursuance of criticism, he strive for critique of his poem. However, Rilke refuses to criticize the young military born poet, but rather denounce Kappus inquiry for criticism in his poem. Poems, like stories and novels, often have themes and ideas that are expressed. In the two poems I read, de los Santos’ “Perfect Dress” and Hoagland’s “Beauty”, it is apparent that great thought was put into themes of beauty and into the ideas and opinions behind it. Through analyzation of these two poems I will collectively share the opinions and uncover perhaps previously unrealized perspectives that perhaps is not originally apparent…

Environment: The constantly changing landscape of the internet is the environment in which Yahoo! exists. Increasing and intensifying competition from companies like Google have seen Yahoo! overtaken in terms of its leadership in key internet markets like internet searching using search engines. The fact that company has spread itself (and hence its resources) over a plethora of internet opportunities has resulted in the company becoming fragmented and uncompetitive against other niche-focussed companies which compete in the various distinct markets of the internet. The company seems to be following a strategy of adopting technological advancements and social trends rather than being an innovator and a driving force behind these factors. They are constantly playing catch-up in these spheres.…
