The first battle didn’t go so well for Charly, he got scared when he saw everyone dead beside him, and when he got back to camp he knew in his mind that he would die the next battle or two when it was about to start. When Charly he got paid some money and that made him happier because he could eat real food, and send some home to his mother. Charly is now moving even closer to a young man with a “soldier's heart.”
During the end of the book Charly is definitely a man now because he has made many decisions in his life now. One decision he made was that he wasn’t going to find a wife and start a family because he didn’t want to treat them bad and do things he did in the war to them and hurt them. Another decision he made was that he was not going home anymore he was going to die on the battle zone no matter what happens, in which it did happen.
There are many other ways to explain how Charly went from a young boy looking for adventure to a young man with “soldier's heart.” The war changed Charly;s life and the world around him because he went from a fifteen year old boy just trying to have fun in the war and just wanting to see what it was actually like to dieing for his country.
