She waited for Alex to wake. When Alex awoke Becca wanted to ask multiply question but Alex didn’t want to give answers. Alex kept on loading and firing. It wasn’t until he saw the blood on his hands that he noticed he had been wounded. Alex waited in and out of consciousness on June 1st. On June 2nd Charlie rounded him up and Alex was taken to a field hospital at Savage’s Station. He fell asleep there. When Alex woke he was on the operating table. The surgeon pulled out a misshapen minie ball. The doctor told him he expected Alex to survive. It was time for Alex to go home. Alex spent a few days in a Washington barrack before he was sent home to Jonesville. Doctor’s wondered whether his leg needed to be removed. That would be for his family to decide. Without his leg removed, it was possible that he could die. This worried Becca. Charlie wrote Alex from Virginia on June 21st.
He expected Alex to be perfectly fine. Charlie yearned to come home to see his friends. Charlie arrived in Washington in late summer. Becca was thankful for she didn’t want the responsibility of Alex’s leg. Some days Alex was better and some days he was worse. He temperature rose and fell frequently. Becca felt that Alex wanted his leg because of her. She couldn’t admit that she could never marry a cripple. Even when Charlie’s regiment would be injured, Charlie would emerge without a scratch. One day he wouldn’t be so lucky. Until that day he would fight to free the slaves. He would be a free man from war in six weeks. At Stanford Heights Federal cannon opened fire. The first to move forward was the Seventh Michigan. Confederates fired and some began lying down. Union Troops tried pushing the Rebel’s back. The Jonesville newspaper reported the battle. Charlie wanted home more than ever. He was tired of the fighting. He had seen the elephant and now only wanted to be home for Christmas. Alex had begun to spend more and more time out of bed each day. He and Becca took long walks that began to tire Becca out. Alex protested that he shall be ready for war anytime
now.
