After sending them his transcript along with a small letter he cut off any possible communication with his parents. The author states, “ It was the last anyone in Chris’s family would ever hear from him. During that final year in Atlanta, Chris lived off campus in a monkish room furnished with a little more than a thin mattress on the floor, milk crates, and a table. He kept it as orderly and spotless as a military barracks. And he didn’t have a phone, so Walt and Billie had no way of calling him.”. (22 Krakauer). This portrays that Alex in a way cared enough for his parents that he sent them a letter misleading them to think he was okay and that everything was fine, yet little did they know that soon he would be gone without any way of knowing where he was or if would be returning. This situation is significant because Alex chooses to stop communicating with his family first because he knows they would have something negative to say or attempt to stop him. Many people can relate to Alex when he stops talking to his family because sometimes family member especially parents can be too judgmental or overprotective to a point where it's unbearable. Because of this, some people feel the need to get away from their family and venture off on their…
