Alex “For the first time ever, I felt ashamed of my species. The volcano had taken our homes, our food, our automobiles, and our airplanes, but it hadn't taken our humanity. No, we'd given that up on our own.” Pg 50

Darla“A librarian can’t live by books alone, and I wouldn’t eat them if I could. Feel too much like cannibalism.” Pg 75

“Alex Condoms instantly shot to the number-one position on my mental list of must-find survival supplies, far ahead of food, water, and a way across the Mississippi River.” Pg 86

Alex “I used to think that teachers who gave homework on weekends should be forced to grade papers for an eternity in hell.” Pg93

Alex “I didn't care much for being called stupid and softhearted. But the boyfriend bit I could live with.” Pg 128

Alex “The few trees still upright were stripped of their branches, lonely flagpoles without a nation to claim them.” Pg 166

Darla “But unlike thunder, this didn’t stop. It went on and on, machine-gun style, as if Zeus had loaded his bolts into an M60 with an inexhaustible ammo crate.” Pg 204

Alex “The next few hours were, well, how to describe it? Ask someone to lock you in a box with no light, nobody to talk to, and then have them beat on it with a tree limb to make a hideous sound. Do that for hours, and if you're still not bat-shit crazy, you'll know how we felt.” Pg 286

Alex “I wanted, needed to see her so badly that it woke me up at night.” Pg 307 * Darla “I felt bad about dirtying their comforter with my nasty clothes, but who knew what might happen later. If something else bizarre went down and I had to run, I sure didn’t want to do it butt naked.” Pg 386 This is a major plot point because Alex is saying that before the volcano erupted he took everything for granted and now that he isn’t left with much he feels grateful for what he had. * Darla is saying that she would not be able to eat another human being if she had to. She would rather starve. * Alex is saying that

On 4th October 2001, I went on geography field trip to Ashdown Forest. We got out of the coach and started to walk towards the river source. Unfortunately due to the lack of weather there wasn’t any water. It was dry rather than muddy. We took some notes of landscape then we started walk towards the waterfall which was also dry. We could see where the drop was and where the hard rock eroded away soft rock. We took some measurement of the fall (width and depth). Secondly we walked toward the V-shaped valley and river. We drew the landscape of v-shaped valley and jot some notes down as well. But the river wasn’t fill up with water so there wasn’t any flow. So we took some measurements in our mini group. We measured river course section, speed and depth of water. Lastly we started to walk our way back to coach. On the way back we stopped at Arman’s Grave where 6 people died in plane crash in World War 2. We took some note on that and came back to coach. After that we had lunch and come back to school. In this project I am to explain some features of Ashdown Forest that I found out when I was on the trip.…

In the passage from Eudora Welty’s autobiography, One Writer’s Beginnings, Welty depicts how her love for reading was influenced by the challenges Mrs. Calloway, the librarian, presented by guarding the books and by her mother’s example of continuous reading. The zeal she has towards reading creates a motivational tone for the passage, allowing the reader to deeply connect with the meaning of the text. Welty conveys that the willingness to read is established at a young age. She uses many rhetorical devices to emphasise her opinions on reading, such as figurative language, distinct syntax, and unique diction.…

Maya stated “Darl was crazy because of what he did to his mother.” In my opinion it is somewhat unbelievable that someone would burn their mother’s dead body, but he thought that she had suffered enough. Darl had good intentions, but he couldn’t think straight. That’s also why he burned the animals with his mother. The fact that he burned his mother contributes to our decision of him being crazy but is only a little portion.…

Alex is knowing that this sort of behavior is wrong, saying that “you can’t have a society with everybody behaving in my manner of the night” (“Clockwork Orange Film”). Alex justifies his free will/actions implying that although his actions are immoral they balance out the equilibrium of a society because after all you can’t have everyone behave like him because it would create anarchy. Alex even enjoys committing acts of violence. Alex while beating up and older man even states, “Then out comes the blood, my brothers, real beautiful” (Burgess, pg 9). Alex is fascinated when he is terrorizing his victims; Alex fascination with the beating of his victims and the sight of blood being beautiful is very disturbing. This is where the reader believes that Alex’s assessment of people naturally being born evil maybe true. Even Alex disproves F. Alexander’s statement of being influenced by society with his own free will. A prime example of this is when Alex interacts with his probation officer, Mr. Deltoid even declares “We study the problem. We’ve been studying it for damn near a century, yes, but we get no further with our studies. You’ve got a good home here, good loving parents. You’ve got not too bad of a brain! Is it some devil that crawls inside of you?” (“A Clockwork Orange Film”). Deltoid is refining to the sciences and social sciences that…
