I. Identifying the Problem

The problem is the failure of the Grade VII students section B of Davao Winchester Colleges, Inc. with regard to the analysis of mathematical word problems due to poor reading comprehension skills. The class is composed of 28 students (17 boys and 11 girls) with 25% identified above average performing level which means ¼ of the class can perform well and the rest is performing on the average and below average level of performance. The poor comprehension skills in mathematical word problem had been observed since the start of the class (June 2012).

Reading comprehension is directly proportional to problem solving in Mathematics. It means that poor reading comprehension skills will also result to poor performance with regard to solving mathematical word problems. Reading with comprehension and computing are the two basic skills that students require to successfully solve word problems in mathematics.

Being a Mathematics teacher in Grade VII section B, I have encountered students who performed poor both in comprehending and analyzing mathematical word problems. In my class of 28 students, only seven can successfully solve word problems with a little help or without from me. About 50% of the class find it hard to visualize the situation that the problem is trying to indicate. However, I am determined enough to use the rest of the class in giving remedy for the problem. Further, I observed that during quizzes the students

Majority of students lack understanding of mathematical language and show weakness in basic numerical computation. The students make frequent errors because they misread operation signs when adding or subtracting integers or carry numbers incorrectly when multiplying whole number and decimals. Furthermore, these students have difficulty understanding written or verbal directions or explanations, and find word problems especially difficult to translate.…

Marilyn Burns, the author of the article "Nine Ways to Catch Kids Up" realizes that a handful of students are at risk in each classroom. Burns came into this realization after talking with a student named Paul about multiplication. She discusses three issues that are essential to teaching mathematics. This includes helping students make the connections among mathematical ideas, to build the new information on the student's previous learning foundation, and to accompany correct answers with an explanation.…

The material used in this learning segment is a research-based strategy adopted to teach Alejandra steps to solving word problems involving critical problem-solving skills that promote conceptual thinking and understanding by using Schema-Based Instructions (SBI). Her IEP goal states Alejandra to be able to solve real world math problems in addition and subtraction and it aligns with the state standard 5.1.1.4: Solve real world and mathematical problems requiring addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers. Alejandra already has knowledge of adding and subtracting single and double-digit numbers without regrouping as mentioned in her IEP. The learning goals, objectives, materials, learning task, planned…

The purpose of the task was to know the students’ numeracy identification, place value understanding and operation knowledge. The six questions were presented to the students one by one. The research assistants would show them the worksheet and grade the answers from the students (The grading criteria are seen from Appendix A). The same policy was applied to the base 10 questions parts as those of number estimation task. The research assistants were not allowed to provide any answers or clues to the questions. All the responses from the researchers could merely support the students’ cognitive learning and based on the pre-existing answers of the students. If the students were unable to answers or asking for help, they were allowed to skip the questions or be reminded about their previous answers. In that case the research assistants usually encourage and appraise their performance and keep the students continue on the…

Prior to the beginning of my video I had introduced the second word problem of “Mrs. Higashi displayed 57 student drawings on 3 walls in her art classroom. If she divided the drawings equally, how many drawings are on each wall?” After introducing the word problem, we broke apart the word problem by circling the information the word problem provided us with such as 57 student drawings and 3 walls, I also asked students what operation we needed to solve this word problem. The students could determine we needed to divide to solve the word problem. Then I asked students how many white squares will I need to represent the 3 walls and the students responded with 3. After modeling and obtaining the correct number of white squares (paper), I started…
