Our trip to Texas Southern was overall very interesting. We briefly visited with Dr. Thomas Freeman and learned about his long, incredible life, but before that, we walked some of the halls containing mural after mural. Many are elaborate paintings of various elements of the black lives matter movement. Others, like the police brutality mural, have connotations to today’s world and the injustices African American people face on a day to day basis. The mural that caught my eye, though, was the one depicting one mule on a vast stretch of land which, Mr. Ford said, is a symbol of the ‘one mule and forty acres’ the enslaved families were meant to receive after being emancipated. Even though the painting may seem bare, the history of the origin of “forty acres and a mule” is displayed by what is included and excluded because, the mural’s location on an otherwise bare portion of wall represents the hope from an otherwise hopeless position, the mural itself represents the metaphorical promise of forty acres and a mule, and the bareness of the tree and…

In 1716, the Spanish government established several Roman Catholic missions in East Texas. It was then declared that San Antonio de Valero would be served as a new mission. Father Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares was in charge of the mission which was located near Coahuiltecans.…

In Randolph B. Campbell’s biography, Sam Houston and the American Southwest, Campbell argues Houston “was courageous, sensible, and practical” (Campbel xii). Campbell believes Houston shaped not only Texas history, but the United States growth and the “possibilities and limitations of leadership in a democratic society”(Campbell xii). Campbell states Houston proves his impact on history by how he overcame the many problems he faced and his physical and moral courageous way of handling them; However, Sam Houston was a good leader not because he was brave, but because he never took a risk he did not have to take.…

Before Marvin’s game his dad, Mr. Whalen, asked Marvin if he wanted a ride down to the school and Marvin then replied with “No. Thanks, Dad, but no. It’ll do me good to run down there.” (435) This act shows how Marvin is not lazy and knows how to prepare for the game. In addition to warming up he rests, he also knows what to eat and how much. Mrs. Whalen was nervous that her husband, Mr. Whalen, would end up getting caught in the excitement of the game. He promised her that he wouldn’t. When they got to the game, Mr. Whalen eyed the big center before the game started. During the game the big center would not stop fouling Marvin and, “again the big center fouled Marvin.” (439) This act could cause Marvin to get seriously injured, but instead he ignores it and takes his shots. The big center’s dad was speaking harshly about Marvin and saying Marvin should get called instead of his son, Guido. Ironically Mr. Whalen, “who talked long and seriously to Marvin about sportsmanship,” (433) ends up getting into a brawl at one of Marvin’s basketball game over this. Right before this had happened Mr. Whalen’s wife told him that he should go take a smoke because he was getting too excited, and she was trying to help him relax. Unfortunately Guido’s dad caught him at the wrong time. At the end of the fight the principle talked…

While reading the book A Death In Texas by Dina Temple-Raston, I found many differences in our current society compared to Jasper just a decade ago. While reading this book I noticed right away how certain parts of Texas are segregated, including Jasper. I understand that the location does make a difference. Here in Washington there wasn’t a lot of diversity a century ago and we were a lot like the 1998 Jasper. Our “Other” or “Them” were the Chinese. Whereas, just a decade ago, in Jasper, the police department was lenient towards hate crimes and didn’t care if they occurred until Sheriff Rowles was elected. He was colorblind and believed in justice for all. When the murder of James Byrd occurred in 1998 it changed everything in Jasper and drew the attention of the entire United States.…

Watching this movie gives you hope that it can actually happen. I know people who try to live this life. Truth be told, it can only happen in a fairy tale though! I don’t believe it. A little girl finds herself in a new neighborhood and having to make new friends. She stumbles upon some boys playing basketball. Being the tomboy she is, she assumes they will let her play. She ends up in a fight with one boy, Quincy. She goes home only to hear her mom go on and on about how she needs to be more girly and quit trying to be one of the boys. Monica has heard this bit her whole life. The young boy is fascinated by Monica; he has probably never had a girl ever stand up to him in that way. He asks her to be his girlfriend and they share their first kiss together. Throughout the years they maintain their strong friendship, living so close together they comfort each other during family problems. They live window to window. They get to high school and Quincy is, of course, quite the ladies’ man; being the best basketball player in the state, they tend to have that effect.
